Birthday celebration at school?
My DS is starting kindergarten in the fall. His birthday is the first week of school. At his K orientation they told us they really do not want anyone to bring cupcakes for birthdays or any food because of allergies and they want to promote healthy eating. They mentioned making little goodie bags or doing something non food. Does anyone else's school do this? I'm looking for some cute different ideas that I could do!

Birthday celebration at school?
Honestly, the ggodie bags that my kids bring home usually end up getting lost at the bottom of the backpack or thrown out (unless its pencils).
The past few years, the teachers have allowed me to come in and read a book to the class (together with my child sometimes). In third grade, we read a funny story about a guinea pig and I brought our pet guinea pig for the kids to pet. That was a big hit.
Maybe do something like that?

Re: Birthday celebration at school?
Is this a school policy or just a preference? I ask because at our school they say the same thing but EVERYONE still does the birthday treats - EVERYONE. So, if it's not a set policy and just something they try to encourage - I would ask around and find out what most people do before your DC is disappointed later on when others are celebrating with cupcakes!

The school policy is no homemade foods because the classrooms are peanut free. You can bring certain prepackaged food but it has to be approved by the school nurse and she said there are very few things out there that she will approve. So she suggested doing non food items. I'm going to also speak with his teacher the first day and see what she suggests.
