Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
My DH's birthday was monday.
My mom gave him a $25 check. Would that annoy you?
I don't know I am almost offended.
First I am a little shocked at the amount because we always give more than that even when things are tight and I mean she couldn't go get a giftcard instead?
I don't know..I guess nothing shocks me with her these days.
We will see what happens on my birthday in 2 weeks.

My mom usually gives $100- same that she gives us, and my dad usually gets like a nice shirt for him or something like that.

I feel like there is no thought there. Like here's a card and a check. YIPPEE.
I am starting to feel like my MIL treats me better than my own mom.
J - please don't mention this outside of here. Thanks

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
My parents just bought my DH the Wii Bundle, but it was his 40th birthday.
Usually they give him $100 to spend as he'd wish.

between 50-100 is what we normally spend dependin on money.
i am just starting to be thankful i have a MIL who puts a little bit more effort into gifts and it doesn't necessarily mean money.

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
my folks gave DH a $25 gift card to barnes & noble. They never give cash/checks and for them to do a gift card was a stretch and kind of shocking (they don't like anyone to know how much they spent).
You know your relationship with your mom better than any of us, so I don't know that I can say I would be offended or not, kwim?

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
My dad doesn't send DH a gift for his birthday. He didn't even send a gift for DS for his birthday this year.
We tell my mom to get us nothing for birthdays, anniversary, etc. since she's on a tight budget.
My ILs usually give us a check for $50 for our birthdays and $100 for the holidays.

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
My parents give DH money, and they do the same for me, money. No, it's not the most creative but they are very generous in what they give. My MIL is more into shopping and buying actual gifts.

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
so my dh's thoughts on things are...
if its a smaller gift like $25- go out and pick something-
If its a larger gift then check may be more appropriate- dh's parents just gave him a check and he will be getting Mets tickets for his birthday- me i email them my Amazon wish list that they can pick off of....
Dh and I get the same birthday amounts from both sides.. christmas dh parents seem to double - bc Santa brings gifts

My parents are very generous with DH. They like him better than me sometimes
On the same note, my IL's are also very generous with me... and the kids.

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
I don't think my Dad sends anything
but he makes up for that with his Christmas check to both of us
and he sends a nice check for my b-day which is 2 weeks later
however- DH's parents always send me $100
maybe I should mention that to my Dad- he would probably be embarassed knowing that he is not sending Jake anything

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
My mom always gives cash and sometimes a little gift along with it.
I'd rather cash than a giftcard since i am not tied down to where to spend it.

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
my parents usually give a check, they know we, especially dh are hard to buy for so they feel that way we can buy something we really want, and i prefer it anyway
eta i forget to say i can understand the amount bothering you, esp if you always give them more than that

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
my mom is super-psycho about making sure that my DH and my brother's wife get the same as we get. We all get checks on our birthdays.

I see what you are saying that there was no thought involved I guess that would upset me too. More than it would bother DH

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
I think it would offend me. No offense to your mom, at all, maybe she just thinks differently, but I'm pretty sure that now that we're married my parents & his mom spend the same amount on each of us. Maybe it depends on the relationship? Is he very close to your mother?

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
I don't know if I'd be annoyed, I still think it's sweet, but I see what you're saying that a check seems a little impersonal for your son in law's birthday. My mom usually gets DH a sweater and slippers, or something like that, for his bday... and usually takes us out to dinner.

I get a check from IL's. It's more than $25 but I'm not offended by a check. She always gets a nice card with it and this way I get to go get something I want.

Re: Birthday gift from your parents to spouse
DH's parents give both of us $100 on our birthdays and they give us $300 on Christmas.. ($100 for each including DS).. his b-day is the day after Christmas and they buy him presents for that
They have 9 kids and really have to save and up during the year in order to do so, so I think that's really sweet of them to be so generous
My parents usually give DH a gift.. they would spend between 50-75 on him usually, but it's most likey money spent on clothes from the outlets, so it seems like a lot of stuff
Last year DH just wanted everyone to give money instead so he could buy something big.. I told my mom that and she asked how much his mom gives me.. I said $100 so she gave him $100
Not to totally sound like I'm sterotyping old people.. but I know sometimes older people will write checks for small amounts like that.. I remember my grandma doing this when we were littl, $10- $25 dollars.. but to them.. that is okay and normal.
I still think if your not going to spend much then it's more appropriate to just pick out a gift

My parents don't give any birthday gifts to my DH.
I would be happy with the check.
