birthday party goody bag question?
My DH's family is large- many cousins etc and when they have b'day parties for their DCs they give out pretty extravagant goody bags. The last time my DD received a tee shirt, golden book, small play dough set, cute necklace and bracelet set, bubble set and additional smaller trinkets. The one before that she received a Barbie doll and some candy and jewelry. I walk away from these parties feeling like it was her birthday. My DCs birthdays are coming up and I feel like I have to do the same. The problem is I would also like to invite a bunch of my friends with their DC. This will be an additional 12- 15 children. It's going to be really expensive to do the same for all of those children as well. Do I just do a small favor like cookie etc or should I do these big goody bags for everyone?

You have to do the same favors for everyone. You can't do extra nice ones just for family. How much are you willing to spend? Does the party have a theme? I saw these cute pool backpacks on the Disney website- Tinkerbell for girls, Toy Story for boys. They are $7.99 and 25% off.

You have to do all or nothing IMO - You can't be handing out these crazy bags to kid #1, and give kid #2 something normal .......
I personally say screw what your DHs family does - that's their choice. You should do what you are comfortable with.

You definitely have to do the same favors unless your family is staying longer and you give them something after the party.
I spend about $10 per favor. I would probably spend more for our better friends and less for our acquaintances but it evens out.

Re: birthday party goody bag question?
Yeah, I definitely wasn't thinking to do different favors for his family vs my friends.
His family does tailor the goody bag to the child's age though. We range from about 14 to 10 months old. Older kids get Itunes gift cards etc.
I just wasn't sure if they would think it rude if i don't for their children as they give to mine. The theme is most likely Hungry caterpillar. Thanks for your opinions!

Re: birthday party goody bag question?
Those are the favors for regular birthdays or first birthdays? If it was a first birthday I would suck it up and spend the extra $. If that's the typical every year birthday favor hell.no would I even start setting a $15+ pp favor precedent, lol. For my son's second we gave a coloring book (that I bought in bulk from a dollar store website) and an 8 pack of Crayola (also bulk purchased at like 75 cents per pack) and a chocolate pretzel- the book and pretzel matched the theme.

Re: birthday party goody bag question?
Yeah, these are every year party favors. The last party we went to was for an 8 year old.
So you see the pressure I am feeling?
My DD gets so excited about going to parties now b/c she knows she is getting a "present".

We've received some very high end fancy favors. I appreciate the personalized packaging.
I just wanted to add that my 3yo DS expects and loves favors. He does not know how much a favor costs.
Just do what you feel comfortable with. No need to keep up with anyone.

Re: birthday party goody bag question?
I think another part of it though is family size. My ds1 had 75 people at his second birthday (don't even ask about his first it was bigger than many weddings ). But these people actually are my DH's CLOSE family. He has a ton of first cousins who we interact with all the time and each family comes mom, dad, couple of kids. So, for me, giving out like 25-30 children's favors would make a $15 price point insanely unreasonable, kwim? It's a different story when you're inviting like 10 kids.
