At our old apt I got blinds from Blinds to go with the room darkening backing and they were really good.

I 2nd this. I just ordered one for our kitchen from JCP and I love how it looks and it definitely keeps the light out.

We just got some levelor black out blinds for our DD's bedroom. they were on the pricey side but her room is pitch black during the middle of the day. It's amazing. I got them at Lowe's and they custom cut them for you right there while you wait.

I have roman shades in my bedroom that I got at bed Bath and beyond. I love it - they make the room so dark!
