BMW Owners Come In!
I have always gotten an oil change for my cars every 3,000 miles. Well, I just hit 3,000 on my new car and I called to make an appointment and they said that they service my car at 15,000 miles or 1 year. Does that sound strange to you or is that how BMW works?

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
Audi is every 10k...was weird getting used to at first. They use synthetic oil so the need for changes are few and far between.

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
That's right - every 15K miles. They use a special synthetic oil that lasts forever. When you turn the car on there should be a thing on your dashboard that says "_______ miles until service," then it changes to the radio station or whatever. The car will tell you when its time to go in.

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
They probably used synthetic oil, which lasts for 15,000 miles. I had that on my Porsche and it freaked me out b/c I was used to going every 3K miles. It was my first car to get the synthetic. Now all of them get it.

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
It's funny, because prior to BMW (and most other premium automakers) offering "free" maintenance on new vehicles, they always recommended oil changes at more frequent intervals.
Now that the automakers are footing the bill, so to speak, they recommend less frequent oil changes.
Synthetic oil in autos has been around since the 70's, so why all of a sudden have they changed their tunes? Something to think about...
In any event, yes, you are adhering to BMW's policy. You must either wait till you get the notification on your dashboard that you're due for service, or wait 1 year from your last service, whichever comes first.
Good luck with your Ultimate Driving Machine!

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
thats how it works!! its every 15,000 miles b/c they use synthetic oil
I have even run low on oil before the 15k mark (the light came on) and they told me just to add a pint of oil (make sure its synthetic) and be on my way ...until I reach the next 15K mile mark

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
I asked DH about this, as he is a mechanic. There are a few reasons why the synt oils are now lasting longer. Some of it has to do with the new materials used to make the engine parts. Some also has to do with the new materials used in the synth oils, and yes, some had to do with the dealerships footing the bill. It used to be that if you did not get your regular oil changes that your warrantee would not cover certain engine damage. Now that the client is no longer paying for these DH services, they are stretching them out. My last truck, when I first got it, I had DH check the oil & filter just in case, but I did not need to get it changed until 15K

Synthetic last longer. DH (ASE certified mechanic) changed the syntehtic in the BMW at intervals of 13,000 - 15,000 miles. The Mercedes is the same - lasts for well over the normal 3,000.

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
BMW's have synthetic oil. You don't have to change them every 3k like regular oil. I actually change mine every 8k, just to be safe.

Re: BMW Owners Come In!
I am at 12,000 miles on my X5 and oil level low flashes when I go to shut off the car. I need a new set of wipers and a funny noise to be looked at so I think I will just bring it in next week.
When I was at 3,000 miles I questioned my DH and he told me I have to wait until the dash flashes.
