Boo. I failed my 1 hour glucose test.
I called my doctor's office about my possible exposure to Fifths Disease. The doctor called me back about my question and said she had my chart out anyway and was going to call me. Apparently, my numbers for the glucose test were a little high. I'm not looking forward to taking the 3 hour test. My arm is still purple from the 1 hour test I had this weekend. I'm going to take it next week. While I'm there, I'm also going to get tested for immunity to Fifths Disease. I hope I get good results.
My doctor said I can't eat or drink anything after midnight. If you had to take the 3 hour test, were you given similar instructions?

Re: Boo. I failed my 1 hour glucose test.
Darn, welcome to the 3 hr club.
I just did mine 3 weeks ago, but I skipped the one hr due to family history.
It wasn't as bad as I imagined...but glad it was over. I did pass though.
I fasted for 10 hours, appt was 7am. Some drs say midnight, others say fast 10 or 8 or 12 hrs. I too was conflicted on this...

Re: Boo. I failed my 1 hour glucose test.
A few more questions: Is it the same yucky orange drink as the 1 hour test? Do they draw blood from your arm every hour? I always bruise really easily around the area where they draw blood.

UGH, I go in two weeks. Not looking foward to the drink as I am not a big fan of super sweet things. My dr told me minimal carbs for two days before the test and nothing after midnight the night before.

It's orange but I think stronger and more than the one hrs drink. They take blood, you drink. Hr later, blood again. Hr later, blood again. Hr later, blood again. Total of 3 hrs or so you are there.
Make sure someone goes with you. They won't let you leave and you may feel faint. I did feel faint on and off but was fine overall.

Really? Minimal carbs? My dr didn't give me any instructions on that or not, but I read online before taking the test to def not cut back on carbs and def not to eat an Atkins like diet if you do that.
That they want to see how your body normally does the way you normally eat.
Hmm...very conflicting!

I dont think she meant like an Atkins diet. But she did say the carbs can "alter" the test. Im just going by what she told me.

Really? I can't go this weekend b/c we have the childbirth class so I was going to go by myself next week. I don't think DH can take off from work and I have no family nearby.

My first pregnancy I went by myself and nothing was said to me about someone driving me. I didn't feel faint. If anything, my body was all sooped up from all of the sugary drinks.

sorry, just to clarify. They won't let you leave DURING the 3 hr test time. That's what I meant, not after the test.
If you have to go alone, that's fine, but if you can bring someone with you, it is a good thing. Most ladies on here who did the 3 hr recommended this and I agree.

Re: Boo. I failed my 1 hour glucose test.
Aww sorry Brooke! I failed too, but then passed the three hour. I hope the same for you!
The three hour wasn't great for me...I have terrible veins and used the same one all four times. I felt a bit weak after the first hour, but fine after the next two. I had the orange drink for the 3hr, lemon-lime for the 1hr...orange was definitely better!
I was told to fast after midnight as well, and not to change anything about my diet prior to that.
GL!

I have terrible veins too. When I went for my first trimester screening, the woman lectured me b/c I hadn't drank much that morning. I had m/s and didn't want to get sick. Plus, no one told me that I had to drink a lot before giving blood. She first took blood from my wrist, but then couldn't get enough so she took the rest from my bicep. Towards the end, I started feeling really nauseous and then got sick in the Quest bathroom.
Since then, I try to drink a lot before going to the lab. They still have trouble finding a vein so they just take it from my bicep. I always bruise a lot from giving blood. Right now, I have a huge purple circle on my arm. Hopefully that will heal soon b/c if I can't drink after midnight, I'm not sure where else they'll be able to take blood from.

Ugh I hear you. I have scars on the inside of both my elbows from techs poking and prodding me over the years. As for the no drinking thing, I was told that water was fine at any point. I would just clarify with your doc/lab.

My veins are bad too. I did have to get stuck one extra time that day due to not getting the vein. So it was 5 total sticks
My recommendation...drink water that am. I was told water was fine (check w/ your dr). Also I hang my arm down and pump my fist before they search for a vein. And request they use the black topped venipuncture needle, not the green. The green is a larger gauge and is worse for small or crappy veins. The black one capped needle has the same size gauge as a butterfly. FYI
These things usually always help me, and I have had loads of blood tests over the years.

Re: Boo. I failed my 1 hour glucose test.
Thanks ladies. When my doctor said no eating or drinking after midnight, I asked if that included water and she said yes. She said not to drink anything. I don't want to risk failing this one so I'll listen to her instructions.
