book recommendations for middle schoolers please
My mom has to purchase a book for all the kids in her law club that she mentors. Most of them don't really even own many books. In the past, she did To Kill a Mockingbird and the Constitution. It needs to be $8 since she basically ends up paying for it herself. Any suggestions? TIA

A Time to Kill by John Grisham. He also writes a series for younger reads, Theodore Boone, that might be good.

do you think that will be too advanced for them? they are from very low income families, although very bright, they dont have the opportunities and family to read with them like, say, I did growing up. thanks

Probably no more difficult than To Kill A Mockingbird........although its been a long time since I read it so I can't say for sure. I think I read it around 8th grade.

The Outsiders
I used to teach in an inner city middle school and my students really liked The Outsiders. And it's paperback, which helps money-wise.
Other books my kids have liked, all in paperback: The Giver by Lois Lowry (though there are some disturbing and controversial aspects to this book, it's thought-provoking and well-written.)
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis- Depression-era historical fiction, but it's almost an adventure story, and Bud is a great character. (He also wrote The Watsons Go To Birmingham, which I never read, but many of my kids read it after Bud, Not Buddy, and liked it.)
The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti- not sure if this is in paperback but it should be- it's about a 17 year old who circulated anti-Hitler newsletters and was executed. Really interesting and sad story.
Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko- about a kid in the 1930s who goes to live on Alcatraz with his dad, a prison guard. Lots of great characters, including the narrator's sister, who had autism during a time when it wasn't called autism.

I LOOOOOOVE "The Giver". Phenomenal book and really lends itself to some interesting discussions. I read it with my 5th graders one year and they loved it. Great book!
