Books for 5 year old girl
My DD turns 5 next month. I would like to buy her some new books but dont know which ones to get.
SHe got the tag reader for xmas and I bought her some books for that but she still goes back to her old books and seems to prefer to make up the words than to use the reader.
She loves the usual "suspects" ie. disney characters, princesses, pinkalicious etc but I wanted something different.
Any ideas?
TIA

Re: Books for 5 year old girl
She is in kindergarten? Does she have a reading level?
As a 1st grade teacher, I hate the cartoon character books (for the younger ages) they are just not age appropriate and they can not read them. At that age she should be looking at books that have a good number of sight words in them and easy, repeative text.
I'm onmaternity leave and drawing a blank but off the top of my head look at the Biscuit books
if you are going to read to her, my favorite author is Robert Munsch! His books are very funny

Re: Books for 5 year old girl
i should have a ton for you since i'm a school librarian but i swear since having kids my brain is oatmeal and i have no memory when it comes to work! i have to be in my library for me to come up with titles.. anyway, i know my 5 yr old niece likes the Angelina Ballerina books (and the show), my DD loves the Fancy Nancy books-there are a whole bunch of them. if she likes puppies/dogs the Biscuit series is cute especially for beginning early readers. you mentioned pinkalicious-there is also purplicious and goldilicious too if you didn't know. Silverlicious is coming out soon too another popular one although i haven't read it is Ladybug Girl (looks cute though) and even though it's not totally girly, Mo Willems writes these books with a pigeon character (Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus etc,,,) my kids love these! Also the book Knufflebunny by him as well is so cute and funny and there are others in that 'series' too. hth!

Re: Books for 5 year old girl
I taught kindergarten and here are some of the books that I read to the children that were huge hits. These would be great for you to read to her:
Laura Numeroff books (If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, If You Give A Pig A Pancake, etc.) Eric Carle books Miss Nelson Is Missing The Kissing Hand (Great Mommy-Child book) Frog and Toad Are Friends Where The Wild Things Are Amelia Bedelia Jan Brett Books (The Hat, The Mitten) Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus (HILARIOUS and one of my favs but you have to get into it) Fancy Nancy Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly The Rainbow Fish (LOVE) The Giving Tree (LOVE) Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Stone Soup A Bad Case Of The Stripes (LOVE) Berenstain Bear Series Franklin Series Junie B. Jones (more for first grade) Nate The Great (more for first grade)
Series for her to read on her own I Can Read Books Hello Reader! Puffin Easy-to-Read Step Into Reading Levels 1-4 picture books with lots of rhyming and repetition
**I can direct you with more specific books for her to read on her own if you can let me know what her reading level is.
