Borders to close all stores nationwide
http://www.newsday.com/business/borders-to-close-all-stores-nationwide-1.3037430
Looks as if the bookseller Borders will go from hard times to extinction.
The struggling company, which filed for bankruptcy five months ago, announced it is now preparing to shutter all its remaining 399 stores, including six on Long Island. The chain employs 10,700 people nationwide.
The company had hoped to attract a bidder that would continue to operate the business. Instead it will ask a bankruptcy judge Thursday to approve its previously announced plan to sell its assets to a liquidation firm after laboring under crushing debt and sluggishness to adapt to a rapidly changing industry.
"Following the best efforts of all parties, we are saddened by this development," said Borders Group president Mike Edwards in a statement.
The liquidation could begin as early as Friday and continue through the end of September, the company said. Borders has stores in Bohemia, Farmingdale, Riverhead, Stony Brook and Syosset. It also has a Borders' Express in the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream. The liquidation would also include Waldenbooks and Borders' airport stores, the company said.

Re: Borders to close all stores nationwide
Unfortunately the world of digital EVERYTHING is Borders downfall.
I am a book addict! When i just recently moved I had to donate probably 400 book of all sizes and genres because I just couldn't fathom taking them with me. I invested in a Kindle and never looked back. Carrying around a 2000 page Let the Right One In just isn't practical.

This is really sad. I will never give up.my books. I hate to think that one day I won't be able to go and buy an actual book. It's just not right.

Re: Borders to close all stores nationwide
I never thought I'd be a fan of the Kindle or e-readers like it, but I have to say, I got used to it fast and now I love it. I just don't have the space in my house to storee 400 books that I will never read again. Space is at a premium so the kindle is perfect for me.
Just like CDs have become a thing of the past, DVDs will too, and finally books. Even magazines are going online and electronic. Sign of the times I guess

There are few things in life that make me so happy as a trip to the bookstore.
There are a few smaller, indie ones I frequent, but Borders has always been a place where I could just get lost for awhile.

I just hope that in the future we will still be able to pick up childrens book... There is just something so nice about a kid picking up a book, looking at it, opening the pages, touching it, or just sitting next to them a reading it as you hold the book together .

Agreed. I love my Nook color. I never thought I would move to an e-reader.
I adore book stores. I can browse for hours and leave with a stack of books, but the truth of the matter is that I don't have the space for all these novels that I'm going to likely read once.
I hope that brick & mortar book stores always exist though. It would be sad not to have that option, especially for children.

Re: Borders to close all stores nationwide
This really upsets me. I was just in the Borders in Bohemia not too long ago and thought how much I loved it in there, so peaceful to walk around and browse. When my papa was still alive, I took him to that Borders a few times to sit and read and when I go in there still, I always feel connected to him.

I never loved Borders, but I am really sad because it's the only bookstore within 30 minutes of me.

Never thought about that. Yes, we totally need old fashioned children's books. A Kindle or Nook just wouldn't work for that!

Children's books on the Nook and iPad are ANIMATED now. I see a day in the future when kids will be like, why would we want a regular book when we can read on the Nook/iPad/whatever.new.device.there.is and it will be animated???

Re: Borders to close all stores nationwide
I can't remember the last time I've bought a book AT a bookstore. Amazon always has better prices when I am looking for actual books...and I e read a ton. The only books I really buy are cookbooks and I usually get those at Target or Amazon...
Sign of the times, Tower Records was much more upsetting for me.
Which meanwhile, when I want a CD now, its like a scavenger hunt trying to find a freakin store that sells them! Last time I went to FYE I was the only one there...
On another note...I wonder who is going to take their huge space by MSG?
