My DH's great uncle picks up the cans and uses the money he gets from them to buy savings bonds for his great grand kids.

Heck no..We bring them back everytime we grocery shop. Hand in the reciepts with other coupons and knock money right off the bill.

we leave them out with the recycling ina separate bag. There are poor people who come around and collect them.

I used to, but when DH moved in w/me, I stopped. he throws out everything before I get a chance to put it aside.
ETA: we don't ever buy cans of soda and only buy 2 liter bottles once in a blue moon. the only items we buy on a regular basis that could be brought back for a deposit are bottles of Pellegrino.
