Boy, 14, Dies After First Acne Treatment
A 14-year-old British boy has died after taking prescription acne medication for the first time. The BBC News reports that Shaun Jones of Rhydyfelin, Pontypridd, died after suffering what appeared to be an allergic reaction to the tablets.
The drug has only been identified as an antibiotic for acne. The Jones family will not name the drug that was prescribed by the family doctor until medical tests are completed. "It is unbelievable. He was a strong, fit lad and was loved by everyone," Graeme Jones, the 14-year-old's father, told the BBC. "He was popular with the girls and had a couple of spots, so the doctor gave him some antibiotic acne tablets. A lot of his friends are taking them. It was the first time he'd taken them and he developed breathing difficulties. We called 999 and he went to hospital, but it was too late. The doctors couldn't save him." He then added, "We're still coming to terms with losing him. One minute he was here and now he's gone."
One very rare side effect of this acne medication is a respiratory tract allergic reaction. An inquest into his death has been opened.
