This morning we arrived at 10am and the jury just wanted to hear one of the charges read to them again. The judge read it and then the court typist read some testimony from the toxicologist and they went to deliberate again. We went to lunch where I stupidly ate an enchilada LOL. Right after we finished, we went to the bathroom. I was well, going when my cell phone rang -- it was Maureen. They reached a verdict. Lets just say I'll never forget where I was when I heard those words LMAO. Anywho, we rushed back and I regretted eating what I ate even more as I started to get nervous. Why did I eat that? lol.
The judge came in at around 2:15ish and when everyone was present they brought the jury in and read the verdicts. They went one by one and I felt good - but in shock. I didn't start to get emotional until after - I think I was too nervous. Then, when the Jury left, they took the defendant away and that was that -- Maureen and Melissa came over to congratulate us. Then, Kathleen Rice did the same. And then there were all the officers -- that is when I got emotional. Some of them have become so close with our family since Kenneth got hurt -- and when I looked up and saw two of them CRYING is when it really hit me.
This closes a painful and emotional chapter for me, but, I have a content feeling in my heart knowing that he will get the maximum punishment that our law allows. I know it is not enough, but, it will never be enough... at least whatever he can get, he IS getting. No plea bargain, no good behavior, nothing - it leaves us satisfied.
I think Kathleen Rice said some great things:
"This was not an accident," District Attorney Kathleen Rice said. "Drunk driving crashes are inevitable when people drink and get behind the wheel. This verdict won't speed up Ken's recovery, but it will give Ken and his family the knowledge that this defendant was held responsible for the choices that nearly killed a courageous and brave public servant."
I totally agree and I appreciated her being there with us. It is amazing to think that I looked up to her for YEARS before ever meeting her in person after Ken got hurt. She is an inspiration.
The ADA's Maureen McCormick and Melissa Lewis did a PHENOMENAL job on this case and I was so impressed with how it was handled. It truly deserved the care and concern they gave to the case because Ken deserves that.
Thanks everyone for posting -- it was an emotional day, that's for sure.  I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted. So, that's the story... Now, it's time to celebrate -- mango, get ready.

I forgot to mention this...
Kenneth is NOT paralyzed by any means. I think they just don't know how else to put it... his right side has been affected since the crash because the brain injury is on the left side of his brain so it affects the opposite.
Anyway, they do feel it will come back. It is just a matter of the neurons in his brain reconnecting and finding the right pathways for the messages again. They are always firing, everyday, but the bridges to get those messages to the part of his body he wants to move have been damaged. So, it takes time to either repair those routes or the brain figures out NEW routes to take in order to get the job done.
This could take months to YEARS... Thankfully, with the treatment he receives in New Jersey twice a week, this process will be much faster! I have a great update I'll be giving soon on the movement in the right arm AND leg on Kenneth's thread shortly -- I just need time to write it but definitely soon... We are so lucky he is doing this well. We thank God everyday.
