Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gavin was up ALL NIGHT last night. Igot to the point that Iswaddled him around 4AM just so Icould get some sleep.
Did I do the wrong thing? Should I have just ridden it out?

If neither one of you was getting any sleep, I think it's better to swaddle and get some rest and try again another night.

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any reason you've decided to stop?
We had to go cold turkey because DD was rolling over from back to belly (NOT good to do while swaddled!). It was really rough for a night or two, but she got the hang of it eventually.

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No reason in particular, I would stop cold turkey if there was a threat....but I thought I might just do it before I go back to work, so if there was to be some sleep loss, it would happen now.
I just wonder if he still "needs" to be swadled and I am doing it too early.....

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We had a huge issue with this. I tried no swaddling one night to see how it would go. Needless to say we slept 1 1/2 hrs that night. But when I found him on his belly with his face smushed into the mattress one morning (about a month later) we had to stop. It took about 2 weeks for him to get 100% used to it but now he sleeps fine in his sleep sack. Good luck!

Perhaps just try to stop swaddling for naps only- to get him used to it. Also, maybe you could try swaddling him, but leave one arm exposed.
DD was about 4 months when we stopped. We also used a Sleep Sack which I *think* was helpful.

whats wrong with keeping him swaddled? I only stopped when DD hated to be swaddled and slept well w/out it. If she wouldn't have, I would of kept on swaddlng.

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes there was no restraining her in the swaddle anymore...at about 4/5 months she would bust out and wake up....I switched to the halo sleep slack.
Her hands are still out of control...we have to hold her hands to sleep...she is 5 1/2 months

we had some hiccups in the beginning too -- not that he wouldn't sleep at all but he would wake up a lot because of the flailing arms. We started him for a few days with just one arm exposed. Maybe try that. Good luck!!!!

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My kids were swaddled until around six months. Towards the end we left their legs out but they still loved to have their arms swaddled and slept really well that way. I say keep swaddling a little longer.

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I broke my dd out of it a month ago at 5 months.
She hadn't been swaddled for naps in months so that may have helped.
To answer your question I don't think you did anything wrong. I tried to go cold turkey but was up every hour with her. I started swaddling her loosely so she's break out in the night. There were also a few nights where I had to swaddle her at 4am so she'd sleep.
Eventually (about 10 days), she got used to it. I also used a sleep sack and I don't advocate it as it's dangerous but I also used a blanket. I would tuck the sides under the mattress so it didn't slip making a pocket and that helped keep her arms from flailing.
If your dc is still swaddled for naps I'd start there. You can also hold off on breaking the habit until dc has more arm control.

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We swaddled for about 3 months- that's when he got too big for the small Swaddle Me and too little for the large one, so he would break free.

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we still swaddle DS although he is only 3 months, but I dont plan on stopping until it becomes a concern for safety. I dont swaddle his legs really, and by the AM he is completely out of it but he sleeps through the night so I am not messing with a good thing!

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He may not have been ready. The first two times we tried I gave up because he cried and swaddled him. I tried a couple of weeks later and he slept fine.

Re: Breaking the swaddle=No sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bella never attempted to break out or move with the swaddle (there was literally a dent from her head in the mattress!)
We finally stopped, after many false starts, at 8+ months! It was hard first two nights, but it was definitely time. She slept through the night from 3 months, so I didn't mess with it until I felt I absolutely had too...my ped said it was fine because she was developmentally fine everywhere else.
