Breast Pump Coverage

I just wanted to remind everyone to call their insurance carrier before buying a breast pump. I have empire BCBS and its a crappy plan so I figured they would do nothing. They actually give me 50% off with edgepark so I only have to pay $170 for the medela freestyle. Make sure you call even if you don't think you are covered!

I guess you never know..I have pretty good coverage and they said they wouln't cover ANY of it. And then edgepark told me that they would sell the medela hands free freestyle for a discounted price of $350.Isnt that how much it normally costs? Chat Icon

Either way- its def worth checking out before paying full price. I am bummed that mine isnt covered.

That's great! So did you go through Edgepark first or did you contact your insurance company first?

I contacted my insurance company first who told me they deal with edgepark and I would need to pay 50% of whatever breast pump I wanted. Edgepark gave me a list of what they have and how much I would need to pay . I think its worth it to at least try. I would call your insurance company first because I have heard stories where Edgepark says its covered and then you get a bill. My Husband has Cigna (I am covered under both right now) and they said they only cover it IF your baby has a feeding problem. It all depends on your company plan, not the actual insurance company.

This is really good to know, I was also told it was not covered on my plan. I will have to call them, it's worth a shot!

ETA: I called them and they said my plan would cover 70%! I am hoping they are right. They said they will verify my plan and I should know in 7-10 days. This would be the best if it works out!! Chat Icon

I have bcbs as well and they told me they will not cover anything. How did you find out they would?

I recently spent about an hour on the phone with BCBS talking to all kinds of different departments and they all told me it would not be covered. I called Edge Park, I gave them my plan info and they said my ins would cover 70%. They just need to verify my coverage and will then call me to process the order. Hopefully the info they gave me is correct, it would take the Freestyle down to around $100 Chat Icon

If edgepark tells you the insurance company covers a certain percent I would double check with your insurance company. Someone recently posted about getting a bill from edgepark (for more then the pump costs in the store) b/c after all the insurance company wouldn't cover it. Be careful!

When I talked to them they said you could handle it two different ways, order it paying what they believe you are responsible for and then they verify. If it doesn't work out then yes, you would be responsible for the balance. You can also have them call to verify before you do anything, that is what I am having them do.

I have spoke with the medical coverage dept, prescription coverage dept and the durable medical supply dept. All three of them told me it is not covered. Park Edge told me otherwise so I am waiting to see if that will work out.

They billed my insurance company over $500 for the freestyle (it's about $370 in store).I wouldn't want to pay a balance on that, I would definitely go with what the insurance company says just to make sure.
