breast pumping question - milk supply
Hi, I was wondering for mom's who are pumping only, what's the average ounces of milk collected at each pumping, and how often do you pump? I'm getting 2 oz each session (every 2 hours), and then my dd eats them right away. I don't know how to build up reserves. Does anyone have any suggestions to build up my milk supply? I have been drinking tons of water already. Thanks in Advance

Have you talked to a LC? She may be able to help you.
Are you eating enough on top of the water you drink?

Re: breast pumping question - milk supply
One way to build up your milk production is to keep pumping at least 5-10 minutes after you've expressed all of your milk for the pumping session. It will send your body the message that DC is still nursing and needs milk. Your body should start to make more milk. It won't happen overnight but it will happen.

Re: breast pumping question - milk supply
Thanks for the info, I spoke to an LC, but she was set on me just breastfeeding, so it was hard to get anywhere with her. It helps to know about the 3 weeks, as my dd is only 1 1/2 weeks old. I'll just continue to pump longer and hopefully things will happen naturally.

Re: breast pumping question - milk supply
This happened to me -- I was told to eat oatmeal and drink beer - yes, beer. So I started drinking beer every night after nursing. I also think you get more as time goes on - I was only getting 1- 2 oz at that stage and I just now pumped over 4 oz! (DD is 5 weeks+ now)
