I thought the article made a lot of sense.

Bfing is a labor of love...time and dedication to benefit your child. If you put that much work into feeding your baby, you are most likely putting a ton into stimulating them as well.

There are exceptions to every rule.

I think that even if you cant/wont/decided not to/tried and didnt work BF'ing----you still can stimulate your child in 100000 other ways

So it's not the breastfeeding that is making the child smarter - it's the parenting.

It is 100% the parenting. I HATE HATE HATE these articles. Sorry to sound so angry, but good lord...nothing like making moms feel like cr** when they shouldn't.

You could give a child breastmilk all day but ignore them and let the tv babysit. OR you could formula feed and do nothing but interact/stimulate them. Who will be better off??

Many many factors contribute and I'm sorry, it's just terrible that they publish nonsense like this. What a skewed article...

I said exceptions to every rule

The article is saying it is the parenting. The parenting that bf'ers do.

That's what this article is about.

I have no doubt that someone who doesn't bf works tons and tons on bonding and stimulating. But, this is talking about majority. I think parenting with bfing or without bfing has the same results as long as stimulation and dedication is at the same level.

Studies also show that breastfed babies tend to be "smarter" b/c of other factors...

Women who breastfeed exclusively for the most part are SAHM's in the middle/upper class (I am NOT stating this is in all cases, this is from a previous study!!). More money leads to more educational influences as well as more time devoted to one on one care =slightly higher IQ scores. This is what was previously said on this...

I don't believe that breastmilk alone increases intelligence...not at all. If that were the case, my breastfed cousin would have the brains and my formula fed cousin would not be a doctor, lol.

I sigh reading these things too...another way to put a little guilt on the average formula feeding mom...SO MANY factors contribute to intelligence, these studies are not really reliable IMO.

I agree

I wasn't upset with you Janice! It's anger towards the article. I do NOT think it was well written...to say "BREASTFED BABIES GENERALLY SMARTER" gives off a precedent that breastmilk=intelligence.

How would people feel if they said "Babies of SAHM's generally smarter". It's kind of like that. It would make all the moms who do daycare feel awful.

It really does come down to actual parenting methods which is stated in the article. But the intial header makes people feel badly..I thought it was overall a bad study..and it came out of Belarus!! I mean, I'm not trying to knock it but a good friend lived there for her first 5 years of life and her parents ran from the area. Just odd to me that that is where the study was even done!

Moms are sensitive to this stuff...thats all!

totally understand, that's why I did not want people to think I think any less of those who did not bf.

Believe me, I CRINGE when I read that sahm's kids aren't socialized.

I agree, the title would put me off as well.

well i guess my twins are going to be on the "dumb" side..... I actually hate these comments. I tried to BF my twins.. one took the other didnt.. i got a lil more than 6 weeks of BM my body stopped producing no matter what i tried. These studies make you feel less of a mom because you didnt and couldnt BF.. BTW i AM a SAHM.

Thank you for writing this. I breasfed for 2 feedings and it so wasn't for me or my child. I have 100% respect for women who do, but wish there was the same tolerance for formula users.

These studies are so skewed and biased! You can fool around with statistics to make them say anything!

BTW, I was formula fed and was Phi Beta Kappa Chat Icon

"Mothers who breast-feed or those who breast-feed longer or most exclusively are different from the mothers who don't," Dr. Michael Kramer of McGill University in Montreal and the Montreal Children's Hospital said in a telephone interview.

"They tend to be smarter. They tend to be more invested in their babies. They tend to interact with them more closely. They may be the kind of mothers who read to their kids more, who spend more time with their kids, who play with them more," added Kramer, who led the study published in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.

I take such offense to this statement by Kramer. But no need to go any further as I do not give his opinion any merit considering that this MAN used a small group to come up with this assumption.

Re: Breastfed babies generally "smarter"

AS a BFing mom of an 11 month old I don't find these statements to be true AT all.

Just another "study" that seems to want to start another war between BFing moms vs. formula moms.

Don't play into ladies.

We ALL love and care and devote ourselves to our child as much as we are humanly possible - BFing or not.

You will drive yourself crazy with all these studies that come out....try not to take it personal. You know you do whats best for you and your child. Kerri wasn't BF and neither was I and in no way do I feel that either of us are dumber for it.

I bet next month there will be some study that says something negative about BF....don't sweat it....we all have beautiful, happy, intelligent children

Re: Breastfed babies generally "smarter"

I BF and I don't agree with this article. I think its the parenting. I am happy I was fortunate enough to be able to BF as long as I have. But I think there was a lot of build up for BF that didn't pan out for me. They say that BF babies don't get sick and my son is 6 months and has had 3 colds. They say that BF babies don't get ear infections and DS has had 1. They say BF babies don't get asthma and yes guess what DS may have asthma. I think that all studies are biased. I BF to avoid all these issues and I still have them. Formula fed baby mommies don't get upset its not worth it. Bring up your child the way that you choose. They will be smart if you spend the time to teach. Good luck everyone.

Re: Breastfed babies generally "smarter"

Correct me if Im wrong but when testing children's IQ there is deviations between tests....

The article states that breast fed children did 5% better on IQ tests and academically..which I dont particularly find all that significant...

Here is the way that Im looking at things and why I find this article annoying..it could have been written totally the other way with the same research..

Totally off topic but my daughter has Mosaic Down Syndrome. When compared to children with Full Down Syndrome some children with the Mosaic form do perform better than those with full DS..BUT there is no statistical difference in IQs of Mosaic DS and Full DS..and they perform slightly better academically and slightly better on IQ tests..BUT from a medical stand point and according to ALL the data it isnt statistically significant..

So how can they say that 5% is significant from breastfed babies to formula fed babies??

Please tell me someone understands what Im trying to say..

I totally understand what you are saying. I was saying the same thing to my DH last night when I was reading the post. Five percent is not significant at all.

i totally understand your point. the question is, was the 5% difference in IQ between the study groups found to be a statistically significant difference... i would be interested to see the stats as well...

Re: Breastfed babies generally "smarter"

Here is an article that someone posted about breastfeeding from a yahoo group that I belong to. I thought it was interesting:

http://www.slate.com/id/2138629/

I really think that as long as moms and dads love and care for their children we can not argue that one method of feeding will make babies smarter. There are so many factors that go into raising a child.
