Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
Is there a list of foods to avoid eating? Is caffeine a no-no?

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
My pediatrician told me I didn't need to avoid anything. As far as caffeine, I had 1 cup of coffee a day. Good luck!

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
Basically the same diet as when you were pregnant. People differ on the caffeine issue - I didnt drink anything with caffeine in it until DD was over a year and boy was it hard!
Go to www.kellymom.com for lots of BF help.

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
I avoided caffeine, but after 9 months of being caffeine free during my pg, it was no big deal to continue.
I also avoided artificial sweeteners. I figured if they're not good during pg, then maybe they're not good for the newborn either, kwim?
Other than that I ate what I wanted. I was lucky in that DS didn't seem to mind when I ate a lot of dairy, acidic stuff like tomatoes, etc. There was ONE time over the six months I ate a dish with tons of beans in it and poor DS got incredibly gassy. But that was it!

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
I was caffeine free, dairy free, spicy food free, garlicky free....we had some issues
ETA - ITA with OP about you don't have to avoid anything! You're going to have to wait and see what might affect your DC. As for us, it was pretty much everything

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
I didn't avoid anything and it was wonderful!!!
The only thing was if I wanted to have a glass of wine, I made sure I wasn't going to nurse or pump for 2-3 hours after drinking.

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
Only thing I have had to avoid is egg yolk but just plain. I can have it in foods but not scrambles eggs. And no MSG. They would both turn my son into a maniac. You would not believe what foods contain msg. I can't wait till I can eat onion dip again

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
I would personally avoid peanut butter, due to possible peanut allergy transmission. My DH has bad asthma and studies are suggesting avoiding peanuts/nuts during BF to prevent peanut allergies in newborns who have a family history of asthma/allergies.

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
I eat anything, except raw onions. I was told by many lact. consultants that they can cause gas with the bby.

Re: Breastfeeding diet what to avoid?
The only things I avoided were broccoli and super spicy things for fear of having the baby up all night with gas!
