Breastfeeding moms question for you-thanks!

hope any bfing moms can give me an idea...i just had DD last wed. and she has takedn to bfing very well and i am grateful for that! i have a Chat Icon though about how long to bf on each side..
how long do you BF on each side? do you let DC decide or do you make sure you do equal time on each side? once DD has been on the first breat she seems totally uninterested in the 2nd breast. any tips on how to help this? i really appreciate any info/advice you might be able to give! thank you!!Chat Icon

Re: Breastfedding moms question for you-thanks!

In the beginning, as advised by my sister, a La Leche Leader, she told me to go 15 minutes on each side. Try to burp, change a diaper or kinda make baby cold in between. It does not matter if s/he doesn't take to the 2nd breast. Just start with that one next time. If they do take to the 2nd breast, make sure you start with the one you finished with the next time.

You just have to be sure that the baby is getting enough hind milk and not just fore milk.

Eventually you can let the baby determine how long they suck for.

Our children share a bday! My DS was born last Wednesday as well. Chat Icon

As for BFing, DS takes about 15-20 mins on one side, I burp him and then he usually does about 10 mins on the other side. I've found that if he really doesn't want the other side, its usually because he's full.

My DD never wanted milk from both. Till this day, she still only nurses on one breast per feeding. Sometimes I feel a little lopsided Chat Icon but that's the way it goes!!

ok...thank you all for your responses! i don't think i have been bfing long enough then! wow! i do maybe 10 min on each side but DD usually falls asleep on me Chat Icon and i have been changing her between the feedings to wake her up-that is a good suggestion and it does help. so now that i know it's not massively important for them to take both sides in one feeding i will not feel so much pressure to make sure that both breasts get attention. thanks again!

Reese1106*congrats to you on your 6/20 baby too! Chat Icon
