Breastfeeding Question - foods...

Are you restricted in the type of foods you can eat while breastfeeding? Like you are when pregnant? For example, seafood, certain cheeses, diet soda?

Also, can I eat the foods that the drs. tell you not to give babies, i.e. peanut butter, strawberries, etc?

I was told that most of the restrictions are gone. The one that still holds is fish with mercury in it. I've heard mixed theories on things like peanuts. If you have a peanut allergy in your family history, I'd probably avoid them, but otherwise it's probably ok, as long as not done in excess.

Re: Breastfeeding Question - foods...

There's still some things, like broccoli, because it can cause gasiness for the baby. Limit caffeine & dairy too. Moderation is key for things like tuna.

Oh yes, I forgot about caffeine...I was told 1 per day. Alcohol-a lactation consultant told me I could have up to 1 drink per day, and that beer is actually good for milk production. She also suggested I limit my dairy/lactose intake, because human milk naturally has a very high lactose concentration, and it gets even higher if you consume a lot of dairy, which can upset some babies. For veggies and such, I would see if your baby has a reaction or gets fussy/gassy when you eat those kinds of foods. If not, there's nothing wrong with having them. My DD doesn't seem to react at all.

Re: Breastfeeding Question - foods...

I was told to avoid peanuts because of a family history of allergies.
Otherwise, limit caffeine (it does get to the baby and you don't want to keep the baby up Chat Icon ) and alcohol. Occasionally, I do have a drink or 2 but I wait at least an hour per drink before BF (or longer if I am still feeling even a little buzzed).
I eat all types of foods and my baby does not seem to be affected by it. Some really spicy foods will affect the baby but not my little guy Chat Icon

Re: Breastfeeding Question - foods...

The only thing I had to cut out was MSG. It caused ds horrible gastro issues. He was not able to handle it until recently and he is 16 months old. I nursed for 14 months and it was a long 14 months. You don't realize how many foods have msg until you can't eat it Chat Icon
I ate peanuts and peanut products, I drank wine (a glass) when I wanted it. I had garlic and onions. Just no MSG.

Re: Breastfeeding Question - foods...

i don't consume any caffeine, so tha wasn't an issue for me and as far as food was concerned NOTHING bothers my DD. as other people wrote just limit yourself with high mercury fish and alcohol.

Re: Breastfeeding Question - foods...

My ped recommended I avoid peanuts, but that was it. DD did have a mild milk protein allergy, so for a few weeks I avoided dairy. Once that resolved itself I went back to eating dairy, but not as an everyday thing.

Re: Breastfeeding Question - foods...

Well, my DD has major gastro issues and dairy allergies, so I have had to cut out all dairy, baked goods, anything with dairy ingredients, green leafy veggies, citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine, peanuts and any nut product, shellfish, you get the picture. Basically all I eat is chicken, beef, turkey, steamed and raw veggies, rice, oatmeal and a little bread in small doses! The only plus to this is that I have already lost 40 lbs of pregnancy weight!
