Breastfeeding question: more problems with girls than boys?

I know this is crazy to think of but I have been talking to a lot of people and finding that more girls had trouble latching than boys. I know this is not a 100% true but I figured I would throw it out to you ladies and see how many girl mommies had trouble compared to boy mommies.

I only have a boy, but I had a lot of trouble BFing in the beginning. I had a lot of help from a wonderful LC, but without her help I definitely wouldn't have been able to do it.

My daughter latched with enthusiasm, but I experience sharp pain for many months. (But we are still nursing now at almost 2 years, so we figured it out eventually!)

Same here. I use to see stars.

ETA: I think BF with your first child regardless of sex is always harder since you have really no experience

I'm sure this is true. I hope it's easier the next time around now that I have experience. BFing is hard! You're not alone! Chat Icon

Same here. I was only able to nurse Lauren for 3 weeks but she latched like a champ from the minute she was born.

Re: Breastfeeding question: more problems with girls than boys?

I dont think that is true as I have a daughter who latched on straight away and my sister had a son who did the same. Chat Icon

Re: Breastfeeding question: more problems with girls than boys?

I was just wondering because all of the people I know who had problems, whether it was latching or mik supply had girls and the boy mommies nursed so well.

I nursed DD and so did my sister. both girls latched on fine. Jordana just kept falling asleep at first. I also needed shields for the first few days.

Ella latched on minutes after being born - she made BFing very easy. I don't think your theory holds true.

Re: Breastfeeding question: more problems with girls than boys?

I guess maybe I am just grasping at straws for a reason why I had so much trouble getting started and now that we are latched, there isn't much milk.

I wonder if the jaundice affected her interest in latching initially.

Breast feeding is hard for a lot of people- myself included. I had trouble with her latch (still do!)- its very shallow and now that she is teething, she bites me constantly. We also have supply issues. I don't know how I continue some days but I just do.

Re: Breastfeeding question: more problems with girls than boys?

I hope things start to get better for you..I really do.Its hard in the beginning and there is so much to learn that it does get overwhelming. I think some babies are better latchers than others. I have only nursed one child so I am no expert. There is a BF website called..www.kellymom.com that is a great help with BF. You can post any question and it will always get answered. Maybe you should post on there all your issues with BF and someone might be able to give you some more insight or assitance.

Re: Breastfeeding question: more problems with girls than boys?

I had a LOT of trouble with my DS- he didn't latch on until he was 5 weeks old- before that I just pumped!

It hurt so much and he was always crying.....now it is so easy....it WILL get easier and if it doesn't there is nothing wrong with pumping or formula.....Chat Icon to you for having a tough time now- I promise, this all gets easier.....Chat Icon
