breastfeeding while in the hospital

I am delivering at Good Samaritan hospital and was wondering if you ladies that plan on breast feeding are bringing a pump with you, or if you are doing straight breast feeding. I know they say with c-sections that your milk does not come in right away and I am not sure what to do.

I'm still not 100% what I'm doing yet, but in my breast feeding class the nurse at LIJ told us not to bring our own breast pumps b/c they use the ones at the hospital

Re: breastfeeding while in the hospital

I had a vaginal with ds. He was born Wednesday night and my milk came in very late Saturday night. You have colostrum for the first couple days no matter how you deliver. It is all the antibodies and other good stuff. It is the baby (or pump) on the breast that helps stimulate the milk to come in.
At Good Sam if you need a pump (like if you have a NICU baby) they provide you with a hospital grade pump. My roommate's baby was in the NICU. She would feed her when she could and pump when she couldn't.

I had a c/s b/c DS was breech. My milk did not come in for a day and a half. I attempted to BF but had to supplement with some formula until my milk came in. The hospital I delivered at gave me a pump for free to keep. I am in NJ.

I didn't bring a pump because the hospital gave me one to use while I was there. I just had to bring my own shields (or buy the starter kit from them.)

Re: breastfeeding while in the hospital

I had a vaginal delivery, and my milk didn't come in until the 4th day. The baby can still breast feed, they just get the colostrom until the milk comes in.

ETA: They also don't eat very much the first 24 hours or so

Re: breastfeeding while in the hospital

I had a c/s at Good Sam with DS. My milk came in right around the time that it would have if I'd had a v-birth.

You don't need to bring your pump. If you would like to pump while there, the nurses will bring you a hospital grade one.

However, you should bring your boppy (or equivalent type nursing pillow). You'll need it to help prop up the baby while BFing.

They have LCs on staff at at GS, so you can ask them for assistance while you're there if you're worried.

i delivered at 1230am- was out of it that day- due to the magnesium IV i had...

pumped the next day- no problem using hospital pump-

I'd recommend a lactation consult if possible while you are there- they really help you with the baby latching... also i was pumping with the standard kit they gave me and the consultant ended up helping me out I had to go up in the shield size

Definitely use the hospital pump if you need to pump.

ETA: Ask for an LC as soon as you check in. You may need to ask for one repeatedly, so do not get discouraged.

With DS #1 I needed to pump b/c he was 3 weeks early & my milk did not come in. With DS #2 I did not need to pump.

I had a c-section both PGs
