Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
I'm not sure my information is correct but I believe they say it is best to wait a few weeks to start pumping until you get a good supply and the baby establishes a good nursing routing. Hopefully Michele31 will see this. She is the resident expert on breastfeeding and pumping.

Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
I think it depends on why you're pumping. I started pumping right away to increase my milk supply. I saved it, but I didn't feed it to him right away. I waited until he was 4-5 weeks to introduce a bottle to avoid nipple confusion and make sure DS was nursing well.

Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
I definitly agree with BabyInMarch. I started pumping early on and DH gave him the bottle and I had some difficulty each time for him to latch on for a week. At 3 weeks old he can go from my breast to the bottle no problem but with my next child I will wait. I started pumping to increase milk and to have DH help me. DH gives him his bedtime bottle and I also give him the bottle in the middle of the night. He sleeps longer that way and gives all of us some rest, so he only gets between 2 to 3 bottles a night.

Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
As soon as after the delievery. For most cases, Mom's who pump this early in the stage is because their baby may be in the NICU and can't nurse. There is no right or wrong time to start pumping. Pumping and nursing are both good, because it helps develop a good milk supply.

Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
I started pumping at about 2 weeks because I had a good supply and my son would nurse one side only at a feeding, so I would pump the other side while he ate.
It's best to pump in the morning, after you nurse, that is when your milk is the greatest.

Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
We did about 2 weeks. DH got me the Medela Pump In Style, dual electric and we are very happy with it. We got it to increase my supply and also for DH to give DD some night bottles so I can rest a bit and he can help nourish her too No nipple confusion, thank God!
I pump through out the day in between feedings but find my supply is best early morning say maybe between 3 - 5 am after I have slept a few hours.

Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
I did it right away because Joseph was born with no sucking reflex & needed to be bottlefed.
With Maddie, I also did it right away because I wanted to have DH feed her so I can spend time with both of them.

Re: breastfeeding....how soon can you pump?
My Ped said right away and so did my OB. My OB said it to get my DH to give my DD a bottle so I could get out a little because I had the baby blues so badly. My ped said basically the same thing "let's get Dad involved" is what he said and I did and Im glad because she can switch from breast to bottle with no problem, and Im glad because Im back at work now p/t.

I pumped when my milk came in only not to feel as engorged. but then I didnt pump regularly until the baby was about 4 weeks.
