help....breastfeeding moms

I just gave birth on 3/11 and I have been breastfeeding since his birth. I want to supplement one feeding with formula (at night) -my only problem is that I cannot find a nipple that works with him.

I have Dr. Brown's level 1 and that did not work. I sent my DH to get playtex drop ins with slow drip nipple and that did not work.

He is gulping in the formula and it is going everywhere and hiccupping afterwards-so I stopped immediately.

Anyone have any advice or have experienced this too?

I'm not positive but I think I remember saying Dr. Browns makes a preemie or a newborn nipple that is smaller than the stage 1.

Re: help....breastfeeding moms

why do you want to supplement with formula, just curious?
the dr. browns level1 is what i used when I went back and forth between the breast and the bottle (i used expressed bm in the bottle) - she did get a little sloppy with the bottle until she got used to it, but I never had a problem. Now the same thing is working with my 2nd daughter. Maybe you could try sitting her up a bit in your arms and trying again - i bet she would get used to the flow after a couple of times. I think it's important to do this now - because if she winds up only taking the breast and not a bottle, it might cause problems for you if you have to leave her for more than 3 hours, return to work, etc.

If you supplement you need to pump..so you are actually creating a TON more work for yourself. You will be hurting really badly if you don't and can risk a plugged duct or infection..trust me that is not fun at all.
Try the SILICONE Playtex nipples..wide, not super thin.
Also, it is a myth that formula helps a baby sleep longer. Often the formula upsets the baby's belly and that causes them to wake up more often.

I have my doubts about that statement. Alex was waking every 2-3 hours a night until we introduced a bottle of formula before bedtime. Until then, she was waking with gas/tummy issues at all hours of the night. Granted, she was 5 months old when we made the transition, but for us, it worked all the same...

I agree about supplementing with formula. Pumping BM and giving her a bottle would be better but anyway...I was at BRU today and Dr. Browns does make a Preemie nipple. Maybe start with that.
