Breatfeeding/pumping essentials?
I plan to BF and then pump when I go back to work. Other than a pump (probably getting a Medela Pump In Style) and nursing pads, what else do I need?
Do you pump into a bottle and then pour it into something else to store/freeze milk?
If BFing and pumping work out, how many bottles do you need and what size? I feel so clueless about this stuff.

Re: Breatfeeding/pumping essentials?
I'm also clueless....
storage bags I believe are brand specific (match your pump) I could be wrong....
at any rate, I am registered for a lansinoh pump. they have both disposable storage bags and reusable plastic storage bottles. I registered for the reusable bottles

Your PIS will come with all the bottles that you can pump into (comes with 4 collection containers which is a good start). I use the Lansinoh storage bags to freeze the milk in (pump in the container and then pour into storage bag). A bag of frozen milk will last 3 months in your freezer. The lansinoh bags have a tab so you can write the date and amt of milk on it.
I wouldn't invest in too many bottles as you don't know what your DC will like. I got Playtex drop-ins but Ryan didn't like them so I switched to Dr. Browns, then learned of BPA issues and now we're on to Born Free which he likes. I would start with Born Free honestly - just get a couple though (they come in packs of 2 and are $20). Most people will say when your BF not to give a bottle right away- you may wait until 3-4wks at which point you can start experimenting.

Re: Breatfeeding/pumping essentials?
I've seen the bags and my friends that BF via pump always have their little bags in the freezer. Other than that, I am clueless too...?? Maybe post on the Parenting Board and then let all of us know!!

Re: Breatfeeding/pumping essentials?
I would not get a pump until you are sure your milk come.
I have the PIS advanced and I loved that pump.
I used the Medella bottles to pump. Then I transfered to the freezing bags. I liked to pump better in the bottle first. Then I transfered what I wanted in each bag.
I got about 6-8 Medella bottles. I did not want to feel like washing bottles every minute.
I got a hands-free strapless bra for the pump. It comes handy when you pump 20+ minutes and you have to hold the bottles in each hand.
You might want a nipple cream (sorry for the terminology!!!) but that's what it is. Lansinoh sells it. It's a bit expensive but if they are sore the cream may help.
If you leak as much as I did, you might want to get the Lansinoh pads. They were the only that absorbed my milk. The others were too flimsy and thin.
HTH!

I have the Medela PIS and it came with a couple of bottles to pump into that can also be stored. I think I am going to register for the medela bottles.

Re: Breatfeeding/pumping essentials?
The pump should come with the basics that you need: pump, suction cups (make sure they fit you properly though), valves, and membranes. Then we need Lanolin, storage bags, and disposable breast pads.

My PIS advanced came with a little lunch bag with a reusable freeze pack and 4 bottles. That was VERY handy when I went back to work.

Re: Breatfeeding/pumping essentials?
The lansihol bags are great and the company stands behind their product. With DS I got a package of bags that had a small leak. I called the company and they sent me boxes of new bags with a return label for the bags that had the leak. The other thing I recommend is to get a bm storage container for the freezer. I would freeze my milk and then take them out of the container to always have a good stock of frozen milk. I started pumping at about 4-6 weeks with DS and I used the medela pis which was a life saver. I am going to use it again. Any other help let me know I BF my DS for over a year and he took the bottle with EBM only no formula.

Re: Breatfeeding/pumping essentials?
i also have the PIS... so far it has been fine...
I love the lansinoh pads- I also would not have survived without the lansinoh lanolin cream for the nipples... I use the Dr. browns storage bags for the freezer...
now that we give DD a bottle sometimes, we use the dr. browns glass bottles- they have been great and she dosnt seem to have a problem going back and forth between nursing and the bottle... i have 6 of the small bottles so far...
other things that I wish i had before hand would be a comfortable nursing sleep bra- nothing with an underwire in it, and a few comfortable nursing bras- i just ordered some medala ones from gap.com-- they have free returns by mail- so i ordered a bunch of sizes so i knew i would have the correct fit... nursing PJ tops have also been a great help as well...

I am planning on bfing I am going to pump into the bottle and then tranfer into the bags and freeze as far as how many bottles I don't know but I think that freezing bags would definately eliminate a space problem Image Attachment(s):

i agree.
i had every intention to BF and then pump. i wound up only BFing for 4 days (the pain for me was unbearable) and pumping for 3 weeks. i was only getting 2 oz of milk a day--which wasn't even enough for one bottle!
luckily a friend had given me her pump but i still spent almost $100 on supplies. if i had gotten a $300 pump i would have been very upset because i just couldn't do it.
you won't be pumping at the very beginning so you have plenty of time to go out and get supplies if you actually need them. make yourself a list and get them when you actually start to pump.

My DH would disagree with space problems being eliminated - I have 3 shelfs worth of frozen bags of milk in my freezer - it's getting to be an issue I have about 400 ounces in there. Oh, and I use a plastic ice cube holder ($2) instead of one of those fancy milk organizers.

You might also want to make sure that you have an ice pack to put with the milk when you pump it. I had the original bag one that come with the kit, but it did not last very long & eventually leaked, so I got a flat plasticy one.

For the ice pack the diaper bag that the hospital gives out from Similac comes with a handy cooler and ice pack.
