Broken down car in front of house question
Last nite, one of my neighbors kids friends car broke down, right in front of my house!
A whole group of them were outside til 2am trying to jump it. but they were not successful.
Now i feel bad, it stinks to have a car breakdown. I do not have any rules or postings about parking on the street, we are in the town of oyster bay. So its pretty much fair game.
I am hopeful they will come today and get it towed or fixed, but i have a feeling this car is going to remain in front of my house for a long time.
So if the car remains what are my options?

The cops can't do anything if the car is registered.
There are no laws saying cars parked on the street have to be operational. They just need to be registered and inspected.
If there is a law, i'd be curious to read it because I would like to see how the town can prove it really is not operational.

I'd wait to see if this even becomes a problem. If they spent hours last night trying to get it to run, I think it would be likely they will arrange to have it towed or serviced quickly.

Re: Broken down car in front of house question
i think if u document when the car was left there and it stays there for a few days and its not registered to any of the neighbors, u can call the police and make an abandoned car complaint.....good luck

I am not going to call the cops or the town, i was just wondering. I think they are going to try their best to get the car started. They seemed very intent last nite.

ITA - kids need their cars. I bet it will be sooner than later.
on a side note. There was a pick up truck parked on the side of our property (we were on a corner) when I was in HS. In the middle of the night, we woke to fire trucks - they think it was set on fire for insurance reasons.
about a month later another car was parked there and my mom called the police and they took care of it right away - it actually turned out to be a stolen car (joy ride from a car dealer) - sounds like I grew up in a bad neighborhood - but I swear it was really nice! LOL

Re: Broken down car in front of house question
calling the cops over a broken down car, that was not left there intentially is plain silly. Your wasting their time, and possible taking them away from something more important.
I'm sure the kids will be back before the weekend. If its still there next week, and has not moved or visited, you can call into your local precient and see if they can suggest what you do, but don't call 911.
If the shoe was on the other foot, and it was your car, how mad would you be that the police came and either ticketed it or towed it. The kids probably have to get some help from their parents, and money for repairs and a tow, its probably not going to disaapear today, but I'm sure it will be gone soon
