Bronx Zoo on a Sunday...

Hi all.

We are planning on going to the zoo on Sunday. Does it get packed very early? We wanted to go around noonish but the website states that parking gets filled up pretty quickly. Also, can you leave the zoo to go out and eat and come back later on?

Any info will help.

Yes. It does get very crowded on the weekend. I've heard stories about the parking lot filling up. I usually go very early.

You can leave the zoo to eat & then come back. I'm not sure if you can DRIVE out & then come back (for free). The zoo has great food... and you can bring your own. There are McDonalds close walking distance to some of the entrances.

I would try and go earlier if you can - I find it's always best to get there right when they open.

We went on a Sunday and were there for 10AM. The first lot was full.

We pre-purchased tickets online and were able to avoid waiting. You can also get 20% off if you have an optimum rewards account. (I used my dad's).
I suggest getting the total experience, it's totally worth it.

You can bring food into the park with you. We use those bag coolers and just hung it on the back of the stroller.

There's plenty of places to sit down and eat. The food there is $$ and not worth it IMO.

On weekends the zoo usually gets very crowded. We usually go at 10 and if we can't be there by 1030 we go another day. Now in summer the lots fill quickly. It is a hit or miss thing. We go to I think it is lot B and park there or they let us through to the member lot by Asia. There are other lots. The problem with B is that it fills quickly then they have you park on a very hilly grassy area. We have never had to park there but friends have and were not happy.

I believe if the parking lots are full they tell you to park over at Fordham - Never had to do that so I can't help you there.

No you can't leave and come back (not sure if you can walk out and walk back in - we have a membership - so not sure if they give tickets or how it works - but with parking you pay when you drive in and when you leave you are going out an unmanned gate. I would say no to that question. They do sell plenty of food choices inside - and you can bring in your own lunch. We have a membership and go often (we were there yesterday) - we pack our own lunch 99% of the time. We also pack snacks etc so we don't have to buy anything while we are there. Many people do this. There are plenty of places to eat - and if the tables are to crowded we have seen people eat on the benches around the park.

Keep in mind the zoo closes at like 5 or 530. We get there around 10 or so and leave around 3 or 4 and still miss a lot of where there is to see.
