BTDT advice - taking away the bottle

Okay, so I have been putting off taking the bottle away but have decided next week is it because DS is playing with it and watching it drip and leave puddles all over my house! He is 16 months old.

He does totally identify his bottle vs his sippy cup and really asks for his bottle specifically so I know its not going to be easy.

Also currently DS takes 4 bottles for a total of 20oz they are not associated with his meals...should I expect him just to take less milk and is that okay? How much is too little, if he totally rejects his milk for 24 hours is that okay?

Anyway, any advice, techniques etc are welcome. Is cold turkey better or eliminating 1 bottle at a time...

Thanks!

My son is 15 mos -- watching the bottle drip is one of his fav past times also. He ACCEPTS the cup when he's playing, but when he wakes up he wants a bottle. I'm just trying to ween him down slowly - just a bed time.

Since I'm not a BTDT'er - i'll let you know what someone told me. Her DD was older - about 2 years old and was talking. She "hid" all the bottles. When her DD wanted one they looked for them but couldn't find them so she had to take a cup. After about 3-4 days she just stopped asking for the bottle.

Re: BTDT advice - taking away the bottle

i started to take DSs bottle away at 10 months.. and i started with one a day (at 10 months he took 3 bottles a day)

by 12 months i took away his last bottle and he is 20.5 months now....

he drinks a significant amount LESS of milk (8oz a day) and will only drink chocolate now... but he gets enough dairy throughout the day where as i dont have to worry.

i was neurotic about taking the bottle away at 12 months, and i did.. i know as they get older it gets a LOT harder....

at that age i would take it away COLD turkey.

Good Luck

I'd like to know too. My DS is 17 months. We tried cold turkey a couple a weeks ago and it was a disaster, but he was also coming down with Roseola, which I didn't know at the time, so it probably wasn't the ideal time to try.

My DS is offered a sippy every day at daycare with lunch and at home with dinner. Not only will he refuse to drink from them, he actually gets really ****** if you try to put the spout in his mouth. He will keep it on the table or tray on the highchair as long as he is just playing with the cup, but as soon as you lift it to his mouth, he flips out and swats it away and then throws it on the floor if I put it back on the tray.

Thanks all!

DS loves his sippy cup, but he apparently associates is just with water! Which is funny because he used to take milk from the cup (well formula actually) but now he just gets mad if I give him milk in the c up. and will just go to the fridge and grab the door handle and say no over and over until the bottle comes o ut! He totally gets that I am trying to pull a fast one on him!

We just bought a special Elmo sippy/straw cup so that will be his special milk cup, hopefully it works!

This is what I was going to suggest... give him a special cup for his milk during the day. We stopped daytime bottles cold turkey with DS when he was 12 months and he was hardly drinking milk at all during the day... maybe just a couple of ounces out of his sippy cups. Then he still got his nighttime bottle. But we made sure to give him cheese and yogurt during the day for his calcium.

DS is now almost 20 months and we JUST stopped the bottle before bed about a week ago and again we did it cold turkey. He cried the first night when I brought him a sippy cup and he asked for his bottle, but he eventually drank out of the cup. His routine is a little different now, the sippy cup doesn't seem to calm him down like the bottle did, but he is doing well and still sleeping for us.

I am actually thinking of letting him have his AM bottle and cutting out all the rest. He isnt very attached to the bedtime bottle and has even skipped it on occassion without an issue. SO we will see.

Thanks for all the advice etc.

My DS has the same thing about winding down w/a bottle v cup.

ETA: He also gets a lot of ear infections which a few people have told me could be b/c of the bottle so I'm really trying to cut them out.

Re: BTDT advice - taking away the bottle

DD is 18 months and obsessed with her bottle! She asks for it by name, and will stand at the frig and wait for it. The ped recommended we just go cold turkey. I am mentally getting myself ready for that, as I know it's going to be tough! The ped said her son went on a milk strike for a good 2-3 weeks when she made the switch, so just make sure you supplement the calcium elsewhere.

Good luck!!
