BTDT Advice- Anyone work really part time?

So I gave my notice a couple of weeks ago and my company completely understood but asked me to consider something very part time. This has never been done before since I am in sales and was obviously flattered they think so highly of me. They just came back with a pretty decent offer, I would have $1500 month extra income after paying the nanny and train, and I would have to work only 2 days a week but both days in NYC. Does anyone have an arrangement like this? Do you like it? Pros, cons etc? Looking for advice as I will need to get back to them soon with an answer.

ETA - I have a an almost 3yo DD and an almost 2yo DS. I have been at this compnay for nine years.

I don't do this, but it sounds like a great opportunity. I would love to be able to do something like that. IF you can find good childcare. That would be my concern. I'm not sure if daycare places do only 2 days a week/or how hard it is to find. But if you have that figured out, I think it sounds great. It's an excellent way to stay in the workforce too, so you can keep your experience, especially since you've been there so long. And you can get some me time at work. I was just telling my sister that many times I just feel like "Lily's mommy." I miss being "Susan" sometimes.

I work 2 days a week totaling 12 hours. I love it. To me it's the perfect balance of my time and I get to bring home some extra $$ Chat Icon I am lucky because I work 10 minutes from my house. Sounds like a great offer . Good Luck!

I work 2nights a week (fri & sat) and I think I get the best of both worlds. I get the joys of being a SAHM during the week as well as get the adult interaction while at work. It keeps my foot in the door of the working world without taking too much time away from my family. My only con is since I work weekends to avoid needing childcare we tend to miss out on a lot of family outings.

Same here!!! I may pick up an extra day over the summer though if my mom will watch DS another day for me.

And don't work that PT. I work 4 days a week but my goodness that money seems way to fantastic to pass this opportunity up. You will have an extra $1500 after paying everything with just your salary? I would def take it in a heartbeat.

I work FT but this opportunity sounds great for you. As PP stated, you would have the best of both worlds. Sounds ideal!

Re: BTDT Advice- Anyone work really part time?

I'm actually going back to work next week and this will be my exact situation, though a little closer to home. I am a special education teacher and I am working for 2 agencies that give out cases - I go into homes with children with special needs and work with them in their homes. It's a great job because I can make my own schedule. Well I will be going back Tuesday thru Friday 3 hrs a day. I will be home by 12:30 and my husband and his aunt will be watching the baby while I am at work. Plus I make excellent money $60 an hour so it's well worth it and I still have plenty of time with DD because I will only be working 12 hours a week!

Yes, this is the perspective I was looking for. Since I"ve never stayed at home before, I don't know if I'm going to miss the "me" time. I wish I could take the summer off and reasses in the Fall but I know they need to figure out the situation before then. Thanks for your candidness.

Honestly, it sounds perfect. If my company would go for it, I'd take something like that in a heartbeat...

I work very PT - it amounts to 1 day a week in the office if I want, and maybe some work at home, but that's rare. I make excellent money (I'm an engineering consultant), so that's why I can't pass it up. I go into the office on Tuesday, and that's the day my DH is off (he works Saturday's, so he is off during the week). I can also work some mornings if I need to since my DH has some days he doesn't go into the office until 1 p.m.

I wouldn't pass it up if you can swing it. I really enjoy getting out and having a day to myself, not to mention some extra money in my pocket! Chat Icon And DH really enjoys his days home with the kids (ages 2 and 4 now).

Re: BTDT Advice- Anyone work really part time?

I would say if you have childcare - I would do it.

And if you feel it isn't working out - you can always quit or go back to full time (if you need the money)

Do you think you can ask to do it for a trial for a little while?

I work fulltime but I only go into the office one day a week (NYC). It works out really well for me/us.

My DD's go to daycare PT so that I can get work done during the week.
I try and schedule conference calls around the time that they are in daycare, and when I need to go into the city for any other reason, I just make those arrangements with daycare.

Like you, I was honestly taken back when I asked for and got this arrangement. I make great money and I get to be home with my kids a lot during the week.

Good luck with your decision!

No but I think it sounds ideal. It gives you just enough time to miss them & just enough freedom to still love it.

The deciding factor would be if it was as an employee or a consultant. Your foot is in the door for when they're back at school & it sounds like you could work out some flexibility for when they go to school.

Re: BTDT Advice- Anyone work really part time?

I know - you ladies all have such great advice. Right now my nanny works three days a week for us so I'd need to cut her back to 2 days. Keep in mind, they will be two 12-hour days away from the kids but I can probably manage it so they won't be back to back. We could live on just DH's salary but it's obviously nice to have the extra cushion. And I am trying to think ahead to when I will want to be back in the workforce full time even if thats 10 years from now.

I am leaning towards taking it and then asking to review the situation in two months to make sure its working from everyone's perspective.

Re: BTDT Advice- Anyone work really part time?

I currently work 3 days a week in the office (Long Island) and occassionally from home (only if I want to) and it has been a perfect arrangement. I was f/t before having DD. I asked for Tues., Wed. and Thursdays so I'd have long weekends and it really is perfect. I have long weekends with her, can relax...have play dates...and then I get to come to work and interact with adults adn still use my brain, while not feeling like I'm missing out on DD.

Also I think it's great for her to go somewhere else 3 days a week while I work so she has more exposure and variety in her schedule. HTH!
