BTDT BFing moms...
I know many say not to wake a sleeping baby, BUT I wake Abby once or twice during the night to feed her upon direction from the pediatrician and upon suggestion from each and every lactation consultant I spoke with in the hospital AND the one who called me after I left.
Sometimes Abby gets up on her own and does fine. Other times, it would take a bomb to wake her up. I have tried every trick in the book. I tried holding her under the armpits. I tried massaging her. I tried undressing her and doing skin to skin contact- you name it. Even if she is awake when I start feeding her, she passes out cold.
My question is, how can I wake her and/or keep her awake to feed? I'm sure some of you will think I'm crazy for waking her but that's a choice I made. Judging from the time of this OP, and the fact that I am asking this question at 5am via Blackberry while double pumping, makes the question that much more wacky dontcha think?

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
How old is your DD and how much does she weigh? I was told by my ped once they are back up past their birth weight let them sleep. My friend who had a premie had to wake her DD up every three hours until a certain weight.
I don't know about waking her up, but maybe you could get her to feed without waking up? My SIL suggested rubbing the bottom of DS chin to get him to open his mouth. And then rubbing the top of his head to get him to suck. Seems odd, but it did work.

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
my son woke like clockwork and 10 months later would still wake out of habit - i don't feed him in the mid of the night anymore...getting him naked usually worked for me. placing my nipple in his mouth and rubbing his jaw/ear area helped stimulate the sucking too...
congrats and glad we get to hear ur funny tidbits on parenting now!

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
i was told too to wake the baby up during the nite in the beginning for breastfeeding..although i havent tried it yet, my best friend had these "sleepy" issues with her daughter... some tricks my book said... *stroke her forehead gently with a cool (not cold) washcloth.. *sitting the baby up to nurse, or using the side lying position.. *getting her completely undressed to the diaper, and tickling her back lightly *changing her diaper
HTH, good luck!! Your DD is beautiful!!

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
Jordana fell asleep on me all the time nursing when she was less than a month old. I would get her naked or change her diaper. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
While in the hospital I got so worried when I couldn't keep her up, but they told me not to worry. She ended up being a very adorably, chubby infant!

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
Not sure if you consider it torture, but my SIL used to use an ice cube on her DS's toes to wake him

Logan ALWAYS fell alseep while nursing at night...........my problem was he'd wake, want to eat, then pass out. NOTHING I did worked!
I agree with the cool washcloth on the head....I used to do it onhis feet & neck too........that seemed to help some!
Good luck!

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
I would tickle DS under the chin when he was starting to fall asleep while nursing. I also tried a cold damp washcloth, and stripped him down to his diaper. I also changed his diaper in between switching sides. Hope something works for you!

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
I used to get my son naked except for a diaper and rub a damp cloth on his head. then i started getting scared that he was going to catch a cold so i stopped. It was very frustrating..... Sorry I'm not much help. They did tell me I could stop waking him after a month though.

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
DD was very difficult to wake up when she was a newborn. It took 3 weeks to get back to her birthweight!!! What I ended up doing is pumping and giving her a bottle of breastmilk with a fast flow nipple so that she could feed in her sleep. Then when she was awake I would either nurse or use a slow flow nipple (level 1). I was concerned that she would never go back on the breast after using the bottles, but it ended up working. Good luck!

Re: BTDT BFing moms...
All the tricks above are what I was told. Once he'd start nursing he'd fall asleep and I could never wake him back up, no matter what I tried.
How long did the pediatrician say to keep waking her? I know things can change after the first few weeks. Even with DS (and you know he needed a ton of milk to maintain his 'tiny' stature ) the dr said to stop feeding so much after the first few weeks.

GL! This is exactly what I used to do with G and he would latch and eat while he slept. Also I would graze the tip of his nose to let him know where he had to go.
