BTDT Can we talk Potty Training..
Emily is 18 months, showing some signs of being ready for potty training. She knows when she goes, and tells us PeePee or PhewPhew, she is interested in the bathroom and goes with me in there and points to the TP and everything, saying Mommy PeePee. She also is able to go for longer stretches of time without going and also has very predictable BMs since she goes at arond the same time every day.
I just don't know how to start the potty training thing. I got her a potty and put her on it when she said peepee but since she tells me right after she goes, she doesn't have to go anymore. She does love sitting on it though and getting to be free with no diaper.
How old was your child when you potty trained them, and how did you do it?

Re: BTDT Can we talk Potty Training..
Jack was about 26 months when we started and we were doing great but we are having a few setbacks now....but when it was working I just planned on staying home for about a week and every hour I would put him on the potty. I put him in training pants, not pullups, but regular underwear trainers with the vinyl outside. I also used a reward sticker chart which really got him excited.
A good book to read that has a concise potty training guide is On becoming Toddlerwise. (Same folks as Babywise).

Re: BTDT Can we talk Potty Training..
FYI, not all kids will follow what the books say... We spent quite a few months potty training DS, spending a few weeks at a time on each "proven" method. DS just wasn't interested. We started when he was about 2.5. I think he was using it as a power thing. He has final say over when he goes on the potty, so we can't dictate when he has to go. It's the one thing he has complete control over. He's fully trained now (not quite 4), but I think he thinks it was *his* idea to start, not ours. (The ends justify the means, so I'm not going to argue with him.... )
Not saying this will happen with your DC, or anyone else's, just that it happened with our DC, and it could be a potential stumbling block, but they do eventually cooperate.

We're pretty much at the same point but she doesn't tell us pee pee yet. I'm planning to just dedicate a good week to being at home working on it.

Us too. I bought a potty but I'm thinking I'm just better off getting her to sit on the toilet (with a seat on it for her). I'm not exactly sure of what method I'm going to use, but, I'm going to take time off and stay home with her as well.

Julia is Just learning how to go potty, and shes doing ok with it, she went pee-pee on it last night but very little, but she was so excited she did it!
I feel she understands it, but I think they have to learn to tell us before they have to go and thats the hard part right now.....
Hopefully it wont take to long.

I did try that first but she was scared so I returned it. I figured that wasn't a good way to start if it scared her. Hope you have better luck I'm not looking forward to poop! Also I tried to get her to sit on her potty with her pants down today and she refused so I think she's curious but not quite ready yet which I'm OK with. From what I've read forcing it is way worse. Let them lead.

Re: BTDT Can we talk Potty Training..
I'm not going to pressure her too much either. I just kind of want her to get used to sitting on the toilet and not being afraid first. Then, when I think she's ready, I'll try to get her to tell me when she has to go and make a run for it!!!! Easier said than done, right?

Re: BTDT Can we talk Potty Training..
I don't want to force Emily either, although the thought of no more diapers is tempting! But I know she's not completely ready yet, I just don't know how to do it when she is.
Yesterday she had just finished some milk about 20 minutes earlier, was playing with her dollhouse when she stood up and said "OOH NOOO!" really loud and looked down and grabbed her diaper! I was like what Emily and she kept saying Oh No Pee Pee over and over again, like she was upset that she peed.
And she is really telling me ALL the time when she goes. I reach down, pinch her diaper and lo and behold it is wet and still warm!

She sounds ready. I would definitely start trying. I think there is a book on potty training over a weekend. I have no idea the title though.

Re: BTDT Can we talk Potty Training..
I think what you're doing right now is great, because she's still so young. I wouldn't expect much more until she's two or older.
At that point, I would suggest doing a few days locked in the house and have her run around au naturale. After that go straight to underwear. We did not have success with Pull-ups, they were just a crutch.
DS didn't train until just shy of three years old, but when he did it, he did it all the way, right away!

I agree about the Pull-ups. I don't think we'll do those with DD. It's just too easy for them to treat them like regular diapers (which they really are. The "wet" feeling that they are supposed to give to the child didn't seem to really do anything for DS.) Once we went to underpants, he started being a lot more aware of getting soaked!
