BTDT Moms - did any of you have abnormal AFP results and NOT get an amnio?
If so, what made you decide NOT to get it and what was the outcome at birth.
My AFP results were 1:146 and the genetic counselor said the only way to know for sure is to get the amnio. I'm so torn...

Yes
Even though odds were elevanted they still represented a 1.1% chance of there being a problem. I felt confident with the 98.9% change things were fine and either way would not have ended pregnancy.
In the end everything was fine and next time I will skip the AFP test

1:146 for what?
I had results of 1:10 that DD had Trisomy 18. I did NOT get the amnio. I opted to wait for the 20 week sono to see if they could see markers for it.
The amnio is 'safe' up to 21 weeks, so if they saw markers on DD, I would have had the amnio done.
DD is perfectly healthy. The AFP tests are not a finite number, it just means there is 1 in 146 chances your DC has something, but it also means that there are 145 chances, he/she does not.
I wish you all the luck in the world and I hope your DC is perfectly healthy!

1:146 translates to 0.68493% chance of a problem

I'm sorry, it was 1:146 for Downs Syndrome.
Thank you all for your responses.

Re: BTDT Moms - did any of you have abnormal AFP results and NOT get an amnio?
My AFP came back with an elevated risk for spina bifida. I think it was equivalent to a .05% chance... not sure anymore.
I chose not to get the amnio because my doctor didn't feel it was a huge risk. My son is fine!

My AFP also came back borderline abnormal for spina bifida. I do not remember the exact numbers but say the regular was 2:40 mine was 2:10. She wanted to re-do the blood work and then said we would speak about an amnio. Both DH & I decided if it came to that point we would pass on the amnio. After she re-did the blood work everything was okay. DD is 11 months and fine!! Try not to stress hun

Re: BTDT Moms - did any of you have abnormal AFP results and NOT get an amnio?
I actually made an appt for the amnio but backed out when I got there. In my case, I had a history of recurrent MC though and was extremely worried about that. At the end of the day, I decided I wouldnt terminate anyway and the odds were still <0.50% so I felt OK with not risking it. I didnt have any other markers either and can honestly say (as a huge worry wort) that I never thought twice about it again during my pregnancy.
Good luck to you

Re: BTDT Moms - did any of you have abnormal AFP results and NOT get an amnio?
My AFP came back very high (1 in 10 chance) I decided not to do an amnio because I had a history of recurrent miscarriage and since I wouldn't terminate anyway, I skipped it. I did have a level 2 sonogram that was VERY thorough. The technician saw no markers and my son was born perfectly healthy. Good luck to you, I bet everything is fine!
