BTDT Moms: Baby carrier or sling?

I'm trying to decide if I really need one of those carriers. If so, which is better/easier/more practical?

I always thought they were silly and people were just being lazy but as it gets closer for me, I'm trying to think how will I go food shopping, or to stores, or other errands where a carriage is just not practical. Any thoughts? TIA!! Chat Icon

i bought one and ended up never using it... i actually found that when i had to go food shopping i would leave ds home with my dh... which gave me some alone time and dh some time with ds.... i was never a fan of proping the infant carrier on the shopping cart but i have put it in the basket if i was in bjs or target and just placed items around him

I actually registered for one of each because I'm not sure which one I will like better. If someone gets them for me great, if not, I will probably end up buying the carrier only since it seems to have more back/front support for baby.

I registered for them both, I think I'll like the carrier better, but everyone I know swears by the sling, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I figure DH will use the carrier even if I love the sling.

both! the carrier was not comfortable for me. it killed my shoulders! i loooooved my sling and i used it for a long time. DH however prefers the carrier (we have a Bjorn) and DS seems to like both.

i have a question!! i hear you cant put the baby in the carrier until a certain age because of the hips. is that true? would you get a sling for the first couple of months and then change to the carrier?

Yeah, some of the carriers start at 15lbs, it depends on the brand.

I used both a lot---the sling in the beginning. DS was colicky and I couldn't put him down, so sometimes I used the sling even just around the house so I could use both hands. Then I used a hand me down bjorn and when DS got too heavy for that I bought a beco butterfly which was by far my favorite and I can't wait to use this one again!

I prefer the carrier - more balanced weight on my back. The sling is too onesided. DS LOVES to be in the bjorn. He snuggles into my chest and falls asleep Chat Icon

We have the baby bjorn active which DH is all excited to use, but I'd like a sling for myself - I've heard nothing but great things about them. The Peanut Shell has such cute ones, as does Serena and Lily (but honestly, what do they do that isn't gorgeous?!).

I preferred the peanut shell kind of sling. You can use them from infancy and it was really comfy!

I used the carrier all the time. I was never one to have DS in his carseat and carried him everywhere.
When he got too big I got a Hip SLing but that was a waste because I found it very uncomfortable.

I want to try the peanut shell sling this time but my bjorn will definitely be making another appearance.
