Gates, definitely. To tell you the truth, that's really all I use. I bought the magnetic cabinet door locks that I really should install. I think those are a pretty good idea and my friend loves them. I think you'd definitely want some kind of lock on the "chemical" cabinet.
My SIL and BIL have a toilet lock...and I hate it. Our Lamaze/CPR instructor recommended just putting hook-type lock on the outside of the bathroom so they can't even get in the room. I haven't done it yet, because Katherine can't open doors, but I plan on doing this.

Re: BTDT Moms: Babyproofing
I didn't do too much. Gates on top of the stairs are a must. I did move the chemicals in low cabinets to higher ones in the kitchen. I rearranged furniture and removed my glass coffee table in my family room to make it more toddler friendly.
I put in outlet caps on electrical sockets - those ones you squeeze to put in - are impossible to remove for adults when you need to use the outlet so I got the cheap plastic ones or the swivel ones that cover the entire plate. Those white slip on locks things - they are good and easy - I have them in 2 places - bathroom vanity and microwave cart - may use more in my kitchen. Now that he is taller and my kitchen is almost finished remodeling I bought the magnetic locks to put on some drawers that have knives and stuff like that.
Waste - to me was those furniture bumpers or corner pads - don't stay in place or fit right or can be pulled right off along with your furniture finish. I also didn't use any door knob covers and stuff like that.

Re: BTDT Moms: Babyproofing
i was thinking of putting away the glass coffee/end tables for a little while. they are more for show anyway.
i have the gate already. we have a brick fireplace which we don't use and we have a couch in front of it, however there is some brick exposed. Do they sell something for that?
