BTDT moms- how soon would you take your baby for a beach full day trip?

Just looking to plan...

dsChat Icon is due in May.... dh plays beach volleyball tournaments, How soon would you take the baby for an 1 1/2 hour road trip to jersey shore for a full day tournament?

Also- would you drive back that night, or get a hotel room?

( We do have one of those 10x10 tents so we would keep him out of the sun, & assuming he's not a colicy baby screaming his head off every day)

Thanks!

Probably not till at least 3 months, but that's even pushing it, IMO. Chat Icon

Re: BTDT moms- how soon would you take your baby for a beach full day trip?

DD was playing at the beach in FL when she was 4 1/2 months old. No issues and she loved it. She played at the beach A LOT last summer since FIL lives on the beach out east and MIL lives down the road from a private beach in Huntington.

DS is due in May and I plan on taking him to the beach when he is 2 months old. DD loves the beach too much to keep her away when DS is little. That being said, he will obviously remain under the umbrella with either one of us or a grandparent.

The thing that would concern me is the long drive to and from Jersey. Also, we've had it easier b/c if we needed to bring DD home for some reason it was a matter of a short walk. I don't know if I would take the kids in your situation this summer. If I did, I would definately want a hotel room nearby.

As far bringing them to the beach, as long as its not 90 degrees out and there is shade, I would take a one month old. My friend lives in Miami and has been to the beach numerous times already with her one month old. But you will probably want somewhere to nurse the baby, change the baby away from sand etc. So if you had a hotel room close by, that could definitely work.

We had DS at the beach at 8 weeks old for about 4 hours or so. We had a little contraption for him and then an umbrella as well, he mainly slept the whole time.

I hate the beach....so Lily hasn't gone all that often. I wouldn't have gone with her during her first summer though (she was born at the end of May). Too much work to carry all of that baby gear to the beach when I don't enjoy it!

I had my DD June 18 and she was at the beach by July 4th. It is the summer time you can't stay in the whole time. Just don't let everyone touch her. We had a tent for her that was vented and then we put an umbrella up as well just to be safe. She was fine.

Also, I went after July 4th to the beach at least once a week. But then again I live in Long Beach so there was no way I was staying in.

As for staying overnight...I would see how your baby is. Traffic alone in NJ would make me want to stay overnight :)

Re: BTDT moms- how soon would you take your baby for a beach full day trip?

dunno...
I took AJ out for walks in the sun under a month and it was horrible. Sept.

Every baby is different but AJ is like mommy and HATES the heat.

Even now in this snow she wears a cotton comfy sleep N play and a fleece jacket. That's it, with her bundle me light and a light blanket she's more than comfy. She HATES being overly warm and will let you know it!

Although I want to take her out the beaches by my house, I know it can only be for a little while.

I waited until 3months for over one hour travel.

Personally i think its a lot to ask.. all those ppl, the noise, the heat, the lack of facilities, cooled changing area, cool area for the baby, running water that's cool or warm, if you need to warm a bottle or breastfeed, the bright light (dark area to sleep), place to sleep comfortably, sand in bum Chat Icon , etc.

Good Luck.. its pretty much hit and miss I think.

But I'd say no. Even now I'm only going to take AJ when she's old enough to walk most likely. But its up to you.

I took Landon to the beach plenty of times (he was born in May also) at just weeks old. He was always kept in the shade. But we never stayed for more than 3 hours at a time. For an all day tournament I would say maybe 3 months.

Re: BTDT moms- how soon would you take your baby for a beach full day trip?

as long as you keep the baby in the shade and it's not too hot out, i would just say to use your discretion - you will know your baby better than anyone, and how well they can tolerate the drive and the weather.

they have babies in warm states like FL and CA, you know Chat Icon

but i would strongly suggest you have an "escape" plan to get your DS into someplace cool if you think he is becoming overheated. Chat Icon
