BTDT Moms: Im starting to rethink my repeat c-section decision....please help me...advice appreciated
I am 27 weeks and Wednesday we schedule the c-section for August, im due August 26th. I had a nightmare and i mean a nightmare of a c-section in August of 2009, here is a LINK to my birth story for background. Anyway, a close friend of mine is in labor and i can't help but feel a little jealous and am starting to rethink my decision of having a repeat c-section. Im scared to death of squeezing a massive baby our of my vag (DD was 8 lbs and 2 weeks early so i tend to have big babies) and always have that "is my vag going to be the same every again?" feeliing and the risk of uterine rupture or something happenign to the baby caused out decision to just do the repeat section but i can't help but feel like im taking the easy way out and feel like im missing that experience as painful as it may be. My birth with DD did not go as planned and was very traumatizing and am scared of something happening during my c-section again. Issue is, i will have to see a new doctor for a VBAC, which i have until 30 weeks to decide because here in Maine OB's have to shut their office down for VBAC deliveries and my current Ob can't do that, there is one doc that has an office right on hospital grounds and my OB said i can have a concult with him which i might do just to have all my options there and be informed but i still have that overwhelming fear of giving vaginal birth and uterine risk but i don't want to go through my life constantly thinling i missed out.....i don't know what to do?? Im going to to the consult but i still have a decision to make...WWYD given the past birth story? I really like my OB though and i hate seeing new doctors....this is so hard.....

It comes down to the safest option for you and your baby boy. I'd discuss it with the the potential new Dr at LENGTH, then make your decision from there.

I agree. I had 2 v-births, which were a calk walk. With that in mind, this is one of those situations where it's all about the destination (healthy baby, healthy mom) & not the journey.

There are risks with both c-sections and v-bacs. I personally do not think v-bacs are more dangerous, (provided of course reasons for prior c-section).
If you want to try for a v-bac go and see the doctor and see if he thinks you are a good candidate. Even if you choose not to have one it will give you peace of mind.
As for giving birth to a bigger baby, I have friends who have had 8 lb plus babies and everything went back the way it is suppose to. Our bodies are made to have babies, it is very rare that we make babies too big to fit through the canal.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

If you go read my birth story from last month.. I tried the vbac and I still wound up with a csec. I didnt get a chance to see why you had your previous one, but maybe my birth story for DD2 will give you some more insight.
As I said in my birth story... I was still glad I tried even after going through it all a second time, but it was a long and hard labor and very tough in the moment to be that exhausted and try so hard to hear that it still wasnt working.

honestly you need to do what is best for both yourself & the baby. Since I did labor & ended up with a section with JJ, I opted for the repeat. To me, there was no reason to try for a VBAC. There is no guarantee if you try for a VBAC, that you will get it & may still end with a section especially since you produce "big" babies. The whole reasoning for scheduling a section is so that you don't end up in an "emergency" situation where you have no choice. Why pick going into labor when you are not sure if you can even labor the child?
Even though I had a section scheduled for Nicholas, I went into labor 8 weeks early. I can tell you that going into labor with both boys & ending with a section was bad. With Nicholas, since he was "suppose" to be a section, I did not get any drugs until I was on the operating table! Imagine that pain

Honestly, I think if you are considering it, you may regret it if you don't try. I was supposed to try VBAC this time, and didn't even get a chance because I had a non-reassuring biophysical profile after I went past my due date. It still bothers me I didn't even get to try. It is something I think that will always bother me. There are also risks with a repeat c-section, I wouldn't exactly call it the "safe" option vs. a vbac.

My Dr scared the crap out of me. There are 2 things that happen during a uterine rupture and both are catastrophic (that was the word she used) 1. fetal death 2. severe brain damage
She said in her 14 years of practice, she has only seen this happen twice. he chances are very low, like 1% or something. BUT , if it does happen, its catastophic. At least the side effects from a csection, for the most part, can be easily terated, like infection. For these reasons, I decided to have a repeat csection too

I felt conflicted as well during my second pregnancy. Until, that is, a friend of a friend lost her baby during a VBAC because her uterine wall collapsed and they couldn't get the baby out in time The same thing happened to my cousin, though thankfully the baby was fine, though my cousin can never have any more children.
I know it is not all that common, but it DOES happen and that was a good reminder to me that the ONLY goal in the whole process is to have a healthy baby

as much as i would want to do a vbac i would do a repeat c/s. if you read my birth story i had a very tough after birth experience too. in the end i have a safe delivery and healthy baby.

I had a traumatic birth and c-section with my first son. When I got pregnant again, I wanted the second experience to be different. But I still opted for a scheduled c-section over a VBAC, because I simply could not take the risks.
The birth experience/c-section with my second son was wonderful. No drama, though I went into labor early. Everything was calm, and I was able to bond with him and enjoy him in the early hours that I could not do the first time. It helped heal all the anger/sadness I had over the first experience. Especially if you are very happy with your doctor, I would opt for a second c-section.

Have you had any scans/testing done? Who knows, you may have additional scar tissue or thinned uterine wall due to your infection (or something similar). I wouldn't be comfortable with the added risks.

Your poll says be safe - do the repeat c-section, as if the vbac option wasn't safe. Both carry risks, and the best option for you is best determined by your doctor. I didn't have a chance to read your past c/s experience and why you needed one, but if there was any indication that your labor may not be textbook, I would opt for the repeat c/s. My first c/s was only because he was breech, not his size (although he was 9 lbs 7 oz and 3 weeks early). Since that was the only factor, I was able to go on and have a successful vbac.

ITA. I'm not a BTDT, but after my c-section the OB told me that VBACs are only safe for some women. What was the reason for your c-section? What kind of incision do you have? I'm cleared for a VBAC b/c the reason was that the baby was in distress and my incision is along my bikini line (the area least likely to rupture).

I am very sorry for your friend and your cousin, but c-sections can pose the same risks. I know multiple people who can no longer have children because of c-sections gone wrong.
I even think there are a few women on this site who have had issues.
The bottom line is, both have risks. Meet with the doctor and find out if you are a good candidate. And do some research on risks of both c-sections and v-bacs.

Re: BTDT Moms: Im starting to rethink my repeat c-section decision....please help me...advice appreciated
I wanted to v-bac, my drs. were very supportive all thru my pregnancy. I measured well & because the 38 week sonogram is not routine, drs. didn't recommend one. I requested one just because I wanted to know the size of my little one. Good thing I did, they est. my son to be 9 lbs 15 oz. with a large head. They highly recommended a c-section, which I quickly agreed too.
I'm so thankful I didn't v-bac, & so thankful I had the 38 week sono! One thing I would suggest to you is to have the 38 week sono & then make your decision. Under ideal conditions..under 8 lbs..I think I would have tried to v-bac. Good luck with your decision! :)

You are right Trish. VBACs can be safely done and some people get shut down bc the doctor is not pro VBAC.
I wanted a VBAC with my 3rd and my doctor was pro VBAC. My previous child was breech like Trish's but this baby ended up also being breech so I ended up with a repeat c/s. I was a very good candidate for a VBAC bc they had a history of me progressing easily in the first 2 pregnancies and my firstborn was a vaginal delivery.
However if I was scared to death of pushing a baby out and medically the reasons for having the first c-section were a sound decision, I would try very hard to not to let the missing out in the experience part cloud my decision. I don't mean to sound like it's not a big deal bc I know many c/s Moms have that feeling. I was fortunate and had a really nice v-birth experience but I also know not everyone has great v-birth experiences either. And with a VBAC, there are certain things they cannot do like they could with a vaginal birth with no prior c-section. So if definitely comes down to the reason you had the first one and trusting your doctor. Good luck with it, I hope you get peace with the decision.
ETA: There will always be people who will tell you why you can or cant do it either way (not just here). I had the midwife in my OB's office come in after we tried an unsuccessful version with my first c/s and tell me (unsolicited) how I could have a vbirth with a breech baby. My DH practically physically threw her out of the room. So too many opinions are not always helpful bc everyone is different.

Re: BTDT Moms: Im starting to rethink my repeat c-section decision....please help me...advice appreciated
i had a c-section the first time around. we tried for 19 hrs and i only got 3 cm. It turns out DS was sideways the whole time and no amount of me trying would have pushed him out. next time around, i want to try for a vbac. not because i feel like i'll be missing out if i don't have it, but because of my c-section experience. i didn't have an infection(thank god!) but the actually surgery was torture on me. i was so scared (never been in a hospital before) that my adrenaline was burning off all the drugs. my body adjusts pretty fast to drugs as it is, so to me that's an added risk the second time around. the epidural stopped working just as the doctor was trying to figure out where to make the incision (the anesthesiologist tilted the table so my head would be down to fix that one), my blood pressure was through the roof, and i was making everyone nervous. they gave me something "to take the edge off" which cause me to go in and out of consciousness and start hallucinating (first trip of my life!) i missed DS being born, wasn't aware of anything until they finished stitching me up, was still fuzzy when they wheeled my past my family. because it was so late (almost midnight by then) and i was so exhausted, i didn't see my Ds until next morning at 9 am, 12 hours after he was born!!!!!
i don't want that fear and missing out next time around so i will try for a vbac. if i need to have a c-section again, at least i know i tried. do what you feel is right, it's usually the best decision!
