BTDT moms of newborns
I have a question for all of you. DS will be 3 weeks old on Thursday. My mom has been coming over to help me out, but today she can't and I really would like to get to the mall. I need to pick up a birthday gift for my sister, and I want to also get some more summer outfits for the baby. What do you think of bringing him to Roosevelt Field with me? I figure it would be less crowded today than on a weekend, and I know what I want, so I would be in and out in 45 min or so. When did you bring your babies out in public? TIA!

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
I was out and about at 3 weeks. I just pulled the shade of the stroller down really low and didn't let anyone go near my DS. I also brought purell with me and used it on my own hands before I touched him after touching everything at the mall. I think it depends on your comfort level. If you're comfortable with it, have fun!

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
Personally, I didn't bring my baby out till he was 2 months old. I did not want him exposed to a lot of people when he was little. Everyone - total strangers- tends to come up to a new babya nd want to see him and even touch him and that makes me very uneasy. He is now almost 3 months old and while I do bring him into a store with me when I have a quick errand to run, I have yet to bring him to a mall.

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
I just started bringing DD out yesterday and she is 9 weeks.
Personally I wouldn't - her immune system is very fragile and malls are the worst place. Her pediatrician told me not until 8 weeks, so I listened to him. If DD got sick, i didnt' want it to be b/c I brought her someplace.
Its up to you though - I've seen newborns in airports and everyone was pretty surprised at how long I was staying in with DD.

i have been bringing dd out since the day she came home. i just don't let anybody touch her by keeping her nestled in my sling or putting the canopy down on the stroller.

I brought DD out from the start...I think the first time I left the house was about 2 weeks...and she came with me...she still goes everywhere I do!!
Just keep him in the stroller, and don't let people get too close (you'd be surprised how nosy and intrusive people can be). But if he doesn't mind riding around in the stroller, I think you'll be fine!!

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
I started taking DS out around 3 weeks (outdoor places) and into really public type places around 6-7 weeks. I would say go and just pull the shade over and use a receiving blanket to cover any extra space that the shade won't cover! Have Fun!

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
I didn't until he was 2 months other than the doctor's office and the drugstore and for walks in the neighborhood, but it was also December and January then so lots of colds, etc.
Do you have a cover for her stroller? If so, just put that on, and if you don't have her around many people, she should be fine.

ITA Go out, enjoy.
I took DS out almost from day 1 (and he was a winter baby - and he has never had a cold 5 months later). At the mall no one bothered us so I didnt worry too much and I just went in got what I needed and left.
I think going out on my own, made me more comfortable as a mother. I felt like I could do anything once I was able to take him out on my own without worry.

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
I'm not conservative when it comes to this. DD was in the mall for a few minutes when she was about 4 weeks old HOWEVER.. there is a nasty cold going around right now. Almost everyone I know has been sick with it.
I'd hold off for a few weeks but if you have to go keep purelling & washing your hands pull the shade completely down and don't lift it for anyone. I'm sure your dc will be fine.

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
The mall was the one place my ped suggested I avoid in the very beginning. I started bringing DS to smaller stores (the Italian market, post office) early on (about 3.5wks) but the mall I wanted to wait until he was a bit older.

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
As soon as I could drive after my c-section (2 weeks) I took her out. I'm not the type that could stay home all day every day. We went to the mall, Wal-mart, Target, BRU...everywhere.

I definitely would. It's beautiful outside and it's not like you are going to let strangers touch or pick your baby up. Have fun!!!

Re: BTDT moms of newborns
DH was adamant that we not take DS out until 6 weeks of age. DH (who's a Peds ICU doc) wanted to make sure that DS had his first round of shots before going out. DH even went as far as re-doing the order of vaccines with our pediatrician to make sure DS is covered with what he encounters most commonly at work. Now we take him out to BBB, BRU, or other errands. We're still not taking him to the mall until he gets a little older- I got freaked out by the measles scare at Carters in the Source Mall recently!

I was definitely out and about when DD was 3 weeks old. I kept her close to me and didn't let anyone near her.
If you are comfortable with it- do it!
