BTDT Moms RE: Teething
Is it common for them to not be themselves while teething??
Troy has been "off" at times in the past week, including:
-middle of the night waking, most often he is smiling, cooing and "talking" I can usually give him a bottle and he is off to sleep again. PS, he turns 5 mos on Monday and been sleeping thru the night since 2 mos.
-not taking the bottle. He eats solids very well, but when it's bottle time, he hasnt been finishing it most of the time. Sometimes just chewing on the nipple.
-getting VERY fussy at night, it's like the Witching Hour again!
-the worst was last night, he woke at 2:30am crying (rare for him) I pick him up, console him and go make a bottle (w/ him). He takes about 3 ozs, and falls asleep. No more than 5 min later, he kinda moves like he had a little burp, so I sit him up more, and he projectily vomitted 2x all over me, him, his blankie, the floor, the clean clothes on the floor, etc it even came out his nose. I got DH up (our rooms are adjoining) and as soon as he walked in the room Troy was all smiles! I changed him (and I) took his temp, it was normal.
Are these "side effects" of teething??
TIA!

Re: BTDT Moms RE: Teething
yes yes yes not so sure about that one
teething affects all kids differently- looks like your child might have more trouble with it than others, but it should be very short-lived. hang in there!

Re: BTDT Moms RE: Teething
Yes, the bottle bothers their gums when they are teething.
We give Baby Origel when it's really bad. Talk to your Ped and see if s/he is OK with you giving it. I only gave it when it was obvious that he was very bothered by the pain and it kept him from sleeping.
You can also give him an ice cold, wet wash cloth or a frozen teether.

Re: BTDT Moms RE: Teething
all of your DS's "symptoms" can definitely be related to teething!
We've suffered through ALL of them except the projective vomiting. MY DS was a huge eater but started refusing/pushing away the bottle, but was OK with food (I think the sucking made the gums hurt more) He was soooo unbelievably cranky (he was a colicky infant but this was different) and his sleep was definitely disrupted (he had also been sleeping through the night from about 8 wks on and that suddenly stopped)
.. I'm not sure if the vomiting is as common of a symptom but I've heard that some babies do throw up when the teething is bad. From what I've read, all the excess saliva from teething goes down their throat into their tummies when sleeping (whereas during the day they're drooling all over the place) and that can cause excessive spitting up or in your DS's case vomiting.. I am guessing that the 3 oz bottle you gave him when he woke up just didn't sit well in his tummy and bam, up it came
When things are really bad for DS, we give him motrin at night.. though I think your son is too young yet for Motrin (I think they have to be 6 months old). Tylenol also helps, but I find not quite as well as the Motrin does..
My DS didn't like teething rings, cold washcloths.. nothing.. and Baby Orajel did nothing for us. We used (and still use) the Hylands teething tablets and while they don't help 100%, they do help take the edge off. You might want to give it a try. There are also Humphrey's tablets that are basically the same thing..
Hang in there.. teething really is hell for them (and us!)

Re: BTDT Moms RE: Teething
Thank you all.
Yes, it's 3:03 am and I am awake....
DS went to bed @ 8:30pm woke at 11:45pm (I was smart and went to bed at 10 instead of trying to wait up for DH to get home at 1:30). He went back to sleep at 12am. Only to wake again at 1:30am. He just now went down. I think part of it was being distracted when Daddy came home
We're going to the Ped on Tues for shots (he only got 3 @ his 4mo visit) will ask about options to help Troy out!
Thanks again!
