BTDT Moms: Regarding Surgery
Ryan is having his surgery this Thursday. I am totally starting to flip out. I am so nervous, stressed, practically sick to my stomach.
How do you get through this? I can't stop thinking about it.
When was the last time they were allowed to eat and what time was their surgery? I don't know how I am going to not nurse Ryan, he is going to FLIP OUT.
I have a million thoughts going through my head, I can't take it.
I know his doctor is one of the best in the field. And therefore completely competent, but my heart is breaking just thinking about him going under anestesia, getting intubated, and being operated on for 2 and a half hours, nevermind the approximate 2 week recovery...

Re: BTDT Moms: Regarding Surgery
Hi-beleive me I know what you are feeling-been there Kyle was only 8 weeks when he had surgery. He was born with bilateral club feet and had to have a "heel cord tenotomy" (basically they slice open the back of heels at the Achilles and relase tension on the tendons). His surgery was at Stonybrook. His time was 7am (they scheduled him 1st because he was the youngest patient that day) and I was allowed to nurse him until 3am. He also had to be put under, intubated plus they gave him a caudal block (kind of like a mini spinal to help with postop pain). His surgery, including anesthesia and recovery was about 1 1/2 hours. We weren't allowed to bring him into the operating room and watch him be sedated due to his age-I would probably have passed out even though I'm a nurse! We were allowed to see him in recovery after he was a bit awake-he still had some oxygen and his IV in. They brought us up to Peds to his room and I was allowed to nurse him right away and he did fine. He had to stay just overnight because of him getting general anesthesia and he needed a few doses of IV antibiotics. Any other questions please ask! I hope everything goes well!!!

I have no experience but I wanted to send you lots and lots of hugs! I can only imagine what you are going thru and what you will go thru when the surgery takes place. I'll be praying for little Ryan's full and complete recovery! Hang in there Mama!

Re: BTDT Moms: Regarding Surgery
It is hard, I am not going to lie. Your thoughts will make you crazy. I did carry DD into the OR and stayed with her until she was asleep. It was a catch 22, because it was hard to watch, but I would not have had it any other way. Her surgery was around 7-7:30 am. The youngest patients go 1st at Mather. She cried alot when she woke up and was combative, they told me it was a reaction to the anestesia(sp?) . She was 4 though. I told her to stop crying, mommy was here and she said " Don't make me have to hit you!"
She did not eat after bedtime, but like I said, she was 4
Good Luck, I am sure everything will be okay
