Re: btdt moms: sensory issues
Is this what your ped. thinks or what you and DH thinks? Did you have him evaluated?
I believe there is a mom on here who posted about her DS having sensory issues. I will FM you.

Re: btdt moms: sensory issues
You should definitely seek out the help of an occupational therapist with experience dealing with sensory issues. Have you had an evaluation yet?

Re: btdt moms: sensory issues
My daughter has sensory issues. She is currently getting OT three times a week at a sensory gym. I have seen such a difference in her. She goes to Kidz Therapy. They are wonderful. Everything is a battle. It's not the end of the world, it just more challenging. She was diagnosed at three. She'll be four in a few weeks. I am a teacher too and I didn't even pick up on it. She is my only child and I just thought it was the norm. Now I see it and can't believe what a difference the sensory gym has made for her.
Did your son get an OT eval?

Re: btdt moms: sensory issues (editted with more info)
My friend's son had this and was diagnosed around the same age. He was getting services up until this year and was dismissed(age 5)! My friend is a special ed counselor so you know he was really doing well for her to allow that.
With early intervention, you know it will all be fine down the road. Its just scary right now thinking something is wrong with your baby. Hang in there

Has he been evaled by an OT yet?
When I was doing my undergrad I interned at Kidz Therapy and they are wonderful! I would look into getting him into OT ASAP. They do some wonderful things with kids who have sensory issues.

Re: btdt moms: sensory issues (editted with more info)
You are doing the best for him and you found out early. I often wonder what would have happened if they had caught her sensory issues so early. My daughter is the opposite though. She was afraid to climb, didn't like the swings, HATES her food hot, will eat almost anything, but it has to be cold. Had problems with bowel movements, would hold them in. She doesn't like loud sounds or bright lights. She never climbed out of her crib. Sleeps on the floor now, doesn't like her bed. I could go on and on. She now is no longer afraid to climb. She climbs and jumps off of EVERYTHING now. She loves the swings again. She'll sleep in her bed surrounded by body pillows. It is amazing. She's been going to OT now for only three months. The sensory gym has really helped her. Food thing is still the same. But the progress is incredible. It is a long process but the results are unbelievable. Good luck with the process. If you need any advice or just want to vent, I am hear for ya!

Ava just turned 4, and has sensory issues. I also had her evaluated and treated at Kidz Therapy. It helped tremendously.
her therapy ended with the school year, and she has really regressed in the last 4 weeks.
I would highly suggest giving them a call. They are excellent.

Just out of curiosity - how do you differentiate between "normal" behavior (for instance my DD was really scared of sand at first but she got over it) and a child with sensory issues?

My daughter loves the sandbox. When she was younger she'd stay in there for hours. She wouldn't be interested in anything else. Trust your instincts. Does you dd have other "fears"? Like, my daughter doesn't like playgrounds with tunnel slides. She also has gotten stuck at least two times up in those indoor playground tunnel things. We don't go on those anymore. My daughter walks on her tippy toes. She loves to be rubbed. It calms her down. She LOVES to jump. She is constantly jumping, hopping, skipping. We bought her a trampoline for outside. One of the big ones. She could be in that trampoline for hours. We go on it after dinner even in the winter to calm her down. Then we can have a successful bedtime routine. So, if you find that your child has some interesting "quirks" it could mean they have sensory issues. When Em was evaluated, the OT said that we all have sensory issues to a degree it just depends how it affects your life. Em's was affecting some of her development so that is why she quailified for services.
