BTDT moms .. temper tantrums .. what do you do?
This just started with one of my boys and I have no idea what to do. My sister told me to just not react to them and let him get it out...well it went on for 10 minutes today. I don't want him to think that this type of behavior will get me to react to him....but he also does not seem to stop until I either pick him up or feed him and i can't do that all the time. Any advice??

No advice just .
Dd started that early too, I just did my best to distract her the best I could and it usually works.
Now that she is 19 months they are so bad- I just tell her "you tell mommy when you are done" and walk away. After awhile she stops and yells "done"!

I agree with your sister. Ignore it and it will go away. Yes, it will get worse before it gets better but once he sees it gets him no where it will stop

another for ignoring it---kptoys is right, it will usually get worse first because they are testing you--but if you give in, they will have you hooked.
At their age though, sometimes redirection with something might break the tantrum too before he gets too wound

I usually let it go for about 10-15 minutes or so. The thing that gets me is he starts to get the "sniffles" and that is when i get worried. I totally know it's a tantrum because i'll put on Noggin on the TV when he is doing it and when it comes on he'll stop and see what is on TV and then slowly go back to the tantrum. So frustrating...you want to help them out, but then you know you are letting him know that if he acts like that you will run over to him. So frustrating....

I know, it's not easy but with the other 2 I ignored it, keeping an eye on them to make sure they physically wouldnt hurt themselves and no matter how long it would take you have to let them know that behavior wont get them anywhere. Stay strong!

I agree. It is way easier to give in but in the long run you will be making your life harder. Stick to your guns. Give no response to tantrums, good or bad. I usually just say something like "when you can act like a big boy Mommy will talk to you." and I walk away. They learn quick that they will not get their way if you are consistent.

I ignore it. I'll tell her, "You need to use your words. When you come down we can talk." It has worked 100% of the time

My boys are odler but I also ignore it. My paretns look at me like I am being so mean, but they try to get them to stop and it does not work. When I ignore it and walk away, they will slowly stop and come over to where I am with the other one to see what they are missing.
It really is one of the hardest thins to do though, but I figure as long as they are not beating their head against a tile floor like my niece did, they are fine, LOL.

Me too. And, I'll make her apologize before I give her a hug. Now, sometimes these little tantrums will go LONG. We had a marathon tantrum when we were in Club Med, in Florida, that lasted for 45 minutes. DO NOT GIVE IN. I made that mistake in the beginning, and Alex quickly learned that tantrum = getting her way, so the tantrums only got worse. Once DH and I put on a united front, and ignored ALL tantrums, they become minimal.

Re: BTDT moms .. temper tantrums .. what do you do?
For a while I tried "time out," putting her in the corner, but she would laugh and walk away, I would put her back and say time out again, then she would walk away again- she thought it was a game. Then one time recently I just walked out of the room during one of them (she was gated in the living room so I didn't worry about her)- she got the message. I also make her apologize (well she can't say sorry but she gives a hug/kiss), then I give her a hug.
