I am interested in this too.
Also, I know that's the age where most kids get a cell phone too and I'm concerned that it will get lost or stolen.

BTDT Moms....Any tips/advice for moms of kids going into middle/junior high school
Don't worry! I was a frantic mess before my son started middle school. He has ADHD and is really disorganized, I thought there was no way he could handle all this at once. He did great! In fact, he flourished!! He is doing way better in middle school than he ever did in elementary school. My suggestions to prepare:
Buy a padlock and have him practice with locker combinations. Most likely he has to use the one the school issues him, but if he knows how to work a lock, it will be that much easier. Many kids don't get it down for a couple of days. There is a website with a virtual lock (I think) that might suffice.
If you can get your hands on a map of the school, go over it with him beforehand. If he can get the layout down (the basics like where the gym is and the lunch room) it will be less stressful.
Ask to go to the school and look around, can't hurt.
If you have a neighbor kid on the same bus, ask him/her to walk you child to the right hallway on the first day and point him in the right direction.
Hope that helps.

Forgot to mention. If you haven't already, introduce him to boxers. Changing in the locker room can be traumatic and none of the kids wear tightie whities. Most wear boxers or boxer briefs.

Middle school is when kids start getting cell phones. DS is going into 8th grade. We got him a phone last year since he was in school sports and extra-curricular activities, so it was easier for both him and us to figure out when he needed to get picked up, if he was running late, etc. However, he rarely uses it, and leaves it home most of the time. Not all kids have a phone, so it's not a "necessity", especially in 6th grade.

OK, my boys are only 5 and 7, but THIS type of thing, the type of thing you NEVER think of in a million years is the BEST advice>>>> These are the kind of things you don't even consider, until your kids comes home upset, and too embarassed to tell you - Thank you to all of the BTDT 'boy moms' who will help the rest of us out !!!!

Still check their binder and homework and don't be afraid to email the teacher. Too often parents give their kids the "freedom"'to see what they can do...and they still need structure from home...like big time lol

My best advice is to push organization!
My kids did best with two big binders...one of AM classes, one for PM classes
Our school has an open house a week before school starts...we find their locker, open it a couple of times, then walk from classroom to classroom following their schedule.
I agree whole heartedly with poster above...stay involved!
And yes...the boxer/brief suggestion is spot on :D

NO LUNCH BOXES!!!!
If they bring lunch from home, brown bag it.
