BTDT Moms...Do you bring your DC to the doctor everytime they are sick? UPDATED 2/27

Grace has had a fever for two days, it is 103.5 without motrin or tylenol. I called last night to see what the ped would say and they told me to alternate tylenol and motrin and bring her in today. I am fine with that, but EVERY time she goes into the doctors office she gets something else!

She went in for a ear infection (that she caught from daycare) and BAM! She caught that nasty stomach flu and landed in the hospital for dehydration last month.

I feel like she is sick at least one or twice per month and I am getting frustrated. I feel like if she is tugging on her ear, has a fever...DUH! Its and ear infection! WHY DO I HAVE TO BRING HER INTO THE PED"S OFFICE??????? Why can't the ped just prescribe and antibiotic and ask me to call in a few days if it does not get better? Chat Icon I guess they would not make any $$ if they just used common senseChat Icon .

What are your thoughts? I am Chat Icon over this. TIAChat Icon

2/27: Well, I took Grace to the ped's office yesterday. She has an ear infection and they gave her an antibiotic. I love being right! Chat Icon Her fever is gone, thank goodness.

No I don't. If I don't think it's something bacterial that she can get an antibiotic for I typically don't bring her in and usually it goes away.
When she did have a fever for 3 days I called to see if they had any suggestions and because she wasn't eating they wanted to see her. Of course, it was viral and nothing they could do. Waste of time and money.
When she has a cough and I can't tell if it's in her lungs or not I bring her in for them to check or if she's really not herself and acting cranky or in pain for more than a day or so I will bring her in because I can't tell if she may or may not have an ear infection. Of course all the times I've brought her in except one it's been nothing.
I guess it's better safe than sorry but I try to talk to them on the phone first if I can avoid the trip because I know if it's viral it just has to run it's course.

They want to see you because it may not be an ear infection and if it isn't there is no need for her to be on antibiotics. Unfortunately the overuse of antibiotics has led to resistance and this is why doctors have pulled back a lot on prescribing them unnecessarily.

I know how you feel, but if it makes you feel any better my friend's BIL is a ped and he won't prescribe for his nieces or nephews without seeing them, just to be sure they really need it.

I hope she feels better soon! Chat Icon

Thanks Ladies! Chat Icon Chat Icon

OK. Her nose is runny and the mucus out of it is greenish/yellow, she is tugging on her ear and has 103.5 fever. She never has that high a fever. It is an ear infection, I just know it.

I guess it just pizzes me off that every time I call, their first reaction is for me to bring her in. Chat Icon HELLO??? First time mom here! I need more advice than just "well, we have to see her" dope de doeChat Icon I understand they need to see her for something serious, but the last time I brought her in she got a stomach flu and spent four days in the hospital. Chat Icon
I am NOT going through that again. I refuse.

What do you all suggest I say to the ped when their only reaction is "bring her in". I try to ask questions and the nurses put me on hold because the office is super busy. Don't get me wrong, I love the peds in the practice but the nurses are quick to rush me off the phone. They are nice about it, but I feel like I can't ask questions. You know?

One suggestion is to try to get her in first thing in the morning b4 all the other kids have been there with their germs. If you go to the Dr. after school hours there's a much higher risk of her picking up stuff. I don't bring her in if it's just a cold, but if there was a fever or if her mucuous was green I probably would. I know it's a pain but they do have to see her to know what's going on.

Also, does your Ped have a sick waiting room & a well waiting room?? I also stand and hold my son the whole time AND when I get into the examing room, wipe down the table w/antibac wipes. Plus I stand & hold in the examing room. I wipe down the table in case the ped wants him to lie down on the table. Most time they examine him in my arms.
Hope your little one is feeling well soon!!!!
