Budget California Trip Review

DH an I went on a budget CA trip (spent $3,000 total for the two of us for everything) the beginning of Sept and had a great time.

We took Jet Blue - love having your own TV ($240 each RT) to San Fran

We took the BART system from the plane to the civic center and then walked to our motel (big mistake although it was not very far the hills are a killer to walk up with luggage!)

We stayed at the Travelodge - nothing special but it was in a nice part of town and clean

We went on the Alcatraz tour at night - that was really cool. It's a self guided walking tour and I thought totally worth it.

The follwing day we took a half day tour to Sonoma Valley - two wineries -- this was fine for us since we are not huge wine people - if you are I would suggest a more robust tour.

The following day we took a Muir woods tour - totally worth it. These trees are a sight to see (I would suggest getting there when it opens once the tours get there it seemed to get a bit crowded)

We left the next day in our Hertz rental cardown the PCH -- a beautiful ride with many vista points for you to enjoy. Mid-day we arrived at Hearst Castle San Simeon -- It is cool place that was designed by a woman back in the early 1900's.

After the tour we continued south to San luis Obpsipo (sp?) and stayed at a B&B for the night (Heritage Inn) It was nice - 1st time in a B&B for me - kinda odd you feel like your invading someone's personal space IMO.

Next we continued to Santa Monica and stayed at the Sea Shore Motel. It was the perfect location - 2 blocks for the beach, short ride to downtown LA. We did all the tourist stuff - Santa Monica Pier, Walk of Fame, Griffith Park, Mullholland Drive, Rodeo Drive...it was cool to see all these places in person

After 2 days we went down to San Diego and stayed at the Sofia Hotel (someone on here suggested - thanks!) It was again in a great location - walking distance to the Gaslamp district, pier. I have to say San Diego has perfect weather! We spent nearly 5 hours at the zoo! Again I suggest you go when it opens we did and then took the sky tram to the other side of the park - it was like we were the only ones in the park!

Of course this is the cliff notes version of our trip but if you ever get a chance to go west I would highly suggest it!

Sounds like a great time. We did almost the exact same trip last year and we still talk about it.
