Bug issues with broccoli
I purchased organic broccoli from whole foods a few weeks ago, and while boiling it I noticed brown stuff floating to the top. Upon closer inspection I saw that they were tiny bugs! I picked through each floret, and found literally tons of these suckers embedded inside
A week later my husband bought some organic broccoli from publix. I made sure to look through each floret, and while there weren't as many as before, I still found quite a few bugs.
So now im thinking, maybe I'm having the bug issue because I'm purchasing organic? Nope. I bought some non organic broccoli the other day, and when I picked through it I still found some bugs although not as many.
Has anyone else noticed this problem? To think that I've possibly been ingesting bugs this whole time skeeves me out!

Re: Bug issues with broccoli
I had that one time when I bought a bag from Sam's Club. Totally grossed me out & ever since I've inspected the bags prior.

Re: Bug issues with broccoli
But the thing is, you wouldn't see these bugs unless you picked through the tiny little buds/stems after cooking! The bugs are really small (like the size of a poppyseed) and easy to miss if you are not looking.

Re: Bug issues with broccoli
I just googled this and there is lots of info. Seems like its normal for organic broccoli. One site mentioned soaking in salt water and boiling. I love raw broccoli and almost had some in my salad until i read this post. Yuk! LOL
Never saw these bugs before but i will look out for them! Thanks for the heads up

Re: Bug issues with broccoli
THIS is why I never put broccoli in my salads anymore. I thought they were fleas at first. I was eating a salad and the thing friggin jumped. I seriously almost puked!

Re: Bug issues with broccoli
I wash my broccoli in a mixture of vinegar and water and it gets out the bugs that are sometimes in broccoli but they are bigger. Maybe it will work for the little bugs? I soak them for a few minutes and the bigger bugs float.
