Bundle of nerves
As some of you know, I am starting a middle school teaching job tomorrow. I have never been this nervous about starting a job before! I think it's because I have NO idea what to expect and have not received much guidance. I have not slept well the last few night and my stomach is in knots - AAAHHH!

Re: Bundle of nerves
Don't worry, even experienced teachers (12 years here) have trouble sleeping the night before going back to school. Ask anyone.
just relax and remember your in charge. Good luck!

Re: Bundle of nerves
This is perfectly normal! But you will do great. Just get everything ready to go for tomorrow before you go to bed, maybe drink some relaxation tea, and try your best to get some sleep.
Best of luck tomorrow!!!! I'll be thinking about you!

Good luck!
I know it sounds corny, but just be yourself, be firm and have fun. For me, having my lessons and materials ready always made me feel more ready and confident. I know you'll do great. Middle schoolers really are a lot of fun and will be itching for attention from you.

Re: Bundle of nerves
We all know the feeling! And I can totally tell you from experience how hard it is going into an already established class. So much luck! The nerves are natural but they ****
Anyway, just stand your ground. Today, go over your rules and expectations so you won't have surprises. Almost prepare a mini syllabus. What's your rule for a missing h/w assignment? If it is the ability to make it up but a note home, then do that from the first student on. Don't be nice to make them see how good a person you are. My best step was sending notes or calling home when the sweetest student in the world missed her homework 2 nights in a row. Once it was establsihed that I DO SEND HOME NOTES OR CALL, they knew that I would do it and it wasn't just a threat.
Also, know what you are doing tomorrow. Middle school is a fun age, but still an age that most people avoid teaching, but it's because they can be *obnoxious*. Let's face it, how were we at 13? So know your stuff. Show them that work is expected so start them working. They get the idea quickly that you are an old pro!
Remember, you just have to get through the day. You'll start going from getting through the day to getting through the week. Good luck and remember this is the start of your career!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Bundle of nerves
The best advice I can give you as a first year teacher myself is do your best they could not ask for more than that! And roll with the punches! Try to find humor in all things because they can be vicous!! Please remember it gets better as the years go on! Thats the only thing thats keeping me from the mental inst.

So true!
You will be great. It's that fear of the "unknown". Just remember that they are kids, and ultimately, you are the one in charge. Both schools I have worked in, I've gotten ZERO guidance on anything teaching related, and it always works out to my advantage. I can do what I think is best and no one bothers me. So look at it from that standpoint and hopefully it will help. And just resign to the fact that it's going to be a bit scary the first couple of days, but that feeling only lasts those couple of days until you are comfortable. So take comfort in knowing that this time next week, you will be feeling much better!
