Bus Stop Vent

HOW THE HECK do people not accompany their ELEMENTARY school kids to the bus stop!?!? (and NO, their houses are not in view of the stop!)

DD's bus stop has around 12 kids and only 4 or 5 of them have parents that come to the bus stop with their kid. I am so tired of being the "bus stop parent" telling the kids to stay out of the road, don't run around, etc.

What if something happened to their kid? What happens when the bus is late? I would never even THINK about leaving her at the bus stop alone!

Re: Bus Stop Vent

I was really surprised when I read that our district only requires a parent at the bus stop (picking up or dropping off, even) during Kindergarten. 1st graders can be dropped off without an adult around.....
(We don't let the kids on or off without us around, but the district does, so I'm sure some parents use that "feature".)

Re: Bus Stop Vent

I'm always at the bus stop with my kindegartener.

My middle schooler gets on and off the bus on his own, though.

Re: Bus Stop Vent

Even if the bus stop was on my front lawn I wouldn't let DD out there without me.

I don't think that's fair to you either that you're left feeling responsible to look after these kids whose parents don't seem to care.

How old are the kids? Are we talking 5 year olds or 10 year olds? There is a big difference.

It's Elementary, so I figure they are 10 or younger. The trouble makers are probably 7 or 8

10 is old enough to go to the bus stop him/her self depending on the area. At that age, kids are already taking the subway to school.

But you should not be the bus stop parent. If parents are dropping them off with the expectation that someone else will watch their kid, they are out of line. If kids are misbehaving at the bus stop, I'd email the school principal. I'd explain that you don't want the responsibility of watching other people's kids & are concerned for their safety.

I say email because then you've addressed a safety concern with the school & it's documented.

Re: Bus Stop Vent

In third grade I let my DD go to the bus a few times towards the end of the year without me, but it was me and another parent who took turns keeping and eye on them at the bus stop. I think it was 4th grade she started going to the bus stop by herself half the time and in 5th she went there all the time without me. The bus stop is 2 houses down from mine.

Our district required a parent or someone older than 18 at the bus stop for K and 1st graders.

Re: Bus Stop Vent

I guess it does depend on age AND maturity level of a kid, but in this case, the parent should be there.

Last week, there was an incident where a kid "let go" of a bike and it went into the street just as a car was coming and the car hit it. I should have called the school that day to make a bigger deal of it. I don't want to be the complaining parent, but I also don't want to be the one "responsible" if something happens again.

You know how kids act differently for their parents than they do when they're alone? That's what could be going on here.

I don't consider you a complaining parent. I thinkmy 10 year old is mature enough to go to sit at a bus stop by himself (he's going to middle school next year & will have to do it anyway). If he's not, I'd want someone to point it out to me. They'd be doing me a favor.

and if his bike got hit by car, I'd be glad that he's safe but I'd be driving him to school.
