Buy a plane seat for a 20-month-old?
I'm sure this has been asked 1 million times before, but I never really paid attention b/c I didn't think we were going away anytime soon. But we MAY be going to Florida in February. DD will be 20 months.
Should we buy her her own seat on the plane? We will probably need a carseat while we're down there, so we could use it on the plane if she gets her own seat.

It is so much safer having DC in a carseat on a plane. There is a poster on here that has seen children get hurt first-hand because they were sitting in someone's lap. There are plenty of statistics as well.
Plus, everyone will be more comfortable with their own seat. DD can nap in her seat, and you don't have to have DD on your lap the entire trip. It's uncomfortable enough as it is on a plane.

We had no choice with Continental. They made us buy a seat for Andrew. i am glad though. It gives us more room.

I am ALL for safety, definitely. I was leaning towards buying the seat anyway...Thank you!!

Re: Buy a plane seat for a 20-month-old?
We bought a seat for DD for our trip to WDW (we leave this week). She is 15 months now.
I did b/c I think it is safer than holding them on your lap. You can bring your car seat if you wish - which I think will keep them restrained better Both of you will be more comfortable for the flight and maybe she will even sleep if she is in her carseat which she is comfortable and familiar to her.

Re: Buy a plane seat for a 20-month-old?
I'll spare everyone my soapbox rant because I think they've all heard it before.
Besides being more comfortable to you, it is MUCH safer to have C in her own seat.
I was a flight attendant for 14 years before getting my wings "clipped". I may be the poster Goldenrod is talking about who has witnessed the injuries that can occur to lap children. I've been to Washington to lobby with the flight attendant unions many times to have the practice of allowing "lap children" banned. The stories as well as incidents I've heard/witnessed firsthand are heartbreaking. All because parents are falsely led to believe that flying with your (under 2) baby is safe. The FAA and the airline industry are doing a huge injustice to the flying public by allowing this unsafe practice.
Put it this way- because I am still married to an airline employee, we all fly for free (stand-by). Except when it looks like the flights might be more than half-full, I insist on paying for a full fare ticket for myself and Madelyn to ensure that we will have a seat for her. It makes my husband crazy- but he knows better than to argue with me.

Re: Buy a plane seat for a 20-month-old?
I would... we took DD to florida this past August when she was 20 months old and got her a seat. Keep in mind going to florida the rows are 3 and 3... so if you don't buy a seat, chances are you'll have a stranger next to you- and you, DH, and DC!

Yup, you're the one... This topic comes up a lot, and I didn't feel like searching the last few threads to see who was the one posting all of the helpful info. Thanks for posting again. I think it's very important for people to hear from an actual flight attendant who has seen and heard of incidents first hand.
Another benefit is that since you bought an extra seat, you get to bring more baggage with you.... Whatever the rules are, you get more allotment. If it's 2 bags per person, you get DD's allotment of 2 additional bags. We definitely needed our full allotment when we went to Oregon last year.
