I used them interchangably, though the 2Ts were a little longer/leaner. DS fit both at the same time.

Ds is 14 months, and wears both...haven't seen too much difference in the tops, but the pants are longer.

Re: Buying 24 months vs. 2T clothes

I think it really depends upon the brand.
Clothing labeled 18-24 months (Gap, Gymboree, Old Navy, Children's Place) are smaller in length than 2T.
However, clothing labeled only 24 months (Carters, Osh Kosh) is the same size and can be used interchangeably.

DD has worn 18-24 months since September. She was in 18 months for the summer. I am getting her 2T shirts for the spring and will reevaluate her clothing needs in the summer. I hope that the 2T clothing will last for the summer and I will not need to go out and get additional things.

D will be turning 2 in September but I will probably buy mostly 2T for summer. They are a little longer and my boys tend to be a little taller.

It's funny, JJ will be 2 in September & when buying him some shorts for the summer, I bought 2T...Well I tried them on & they came to the middle of his shin...I then bought 24 months & they are perfect

Re: Buying 24 months vs. 2T clothes

In the brands I buy, the 2T bottoms are definitely longer than 18-24 month clothes. Some shirts are pretty similar in size, but other 2T shirts are a little longer.
