Buying a house and applying for STAR
We are closing on our new house the second week in Jan. The STAR deadline is Jan 2nd. How does that work. Can we still get it or are we out of luck for this year?

Re: Buying a house and applying for STAR
If the previous homeowner had it, it will carry over for that year. If they didn't, you're unfortunately out of luck.
To apply for yourself moving forward, you just have to get your application before the deadline in January 2013.

Depending on who you bought the house from you could be in luck. The previous owner of our house had senior star and veterans star. That carried over to our first year in the house. We saved over $2k!

Re: Buying a house and applying for STAR
So do I have my realtor contact them to apply? Since it is so close to the cut off the seller may not have thought about it.

Re: Buying a house and applying for STAR
You have to apply yourself after the closing -- the forms are available online (the county assessor's office site) and there's a FAQs section on the Nassau site that provides a lot of great info about exemptions and also grieving your taxes. As long as the house is going to be your primary residence, and as long as your household income doesn't exceed the $500K cap, you will qualify for basic STAR.
The seller doesn't need to do anything, since the exemptions are applicable to the individual homeowner, not the property itself.
But as previous posters have said, if the seller currently gets STAR, you will keep getting it while you apply for your exemption(s). When I bought my house, we also reaped the benefit of the previous owners' enhanced STAR exemption (for seniors). In Nassau, you can go right onto the mynassauproperty site to find out what exemptions the current homeowners get.
