buying from a breeder

I am interested in a Golden Retriever and am very pasionate about purchasing from the right breeder and not suporting puppy mills, backyard breeders etc.

I found a local breeder through the LI Golden Retriever club and her puppies are $2000!! Chat Icon . It does include first shots and first trip to vet but I was not expecting it to be that expensive. Is that a typical price from a reputable breeder??

On LI, yes..that's the going rate. I saw some up to 2800.

There are great breeders in NJ for 700-900 hundred, which is like the lowest I have seen for goldens.

We got ours from a breeder in NJ recently.

Hi
Can you share the name or information of the breeder you went to in NJ ?

I live in NJ and we are looking into a golden puppy as well. We already have a golden that we adopted so don't know his info.

Thanks so much !!

We got him in PA. Chatham Hill Retrievers are bit small than goldens. They are a mix of a spaniel and a flatcoat retriever. They have brown, black or yellow. The yellow ones are a little more $$$ (I think $1100). He's such an amazing dog though- I would recommend the breed and these breeders to anyone!

I got my poodle from a breeder here in Port Washington. We paid $1500.00 for him and didn't include shots. He was so worth it, his liniage is all champion show dogs and he has a wonderful temperament.

That is very typical. The money you will save in vet bills later on makes up for it.

Re: buying from a breeder

Yup. This is typical when buying from a breeder.

My mom just bought a yorkshire puppy from a breeder in Cape Cod and paid $1500. The puppy is tiny and comes from a championship line and and a Westminster judge owns the mom.

I wouldn't stick with just the NY/NJ area. My mom was getting quotes as high as 3k for a puppy in the area which is ridiculous.

There are tons of breeders in PA and MA and it will give you many more options.

Keep in mind though, typically the summer/spring time is the slow time of year for breeders. Breeding takes A LOT of time and dedication so there tends to be more littlers born in the winter/fall months when people are in the house more.

G'luck!

Yeah, it sounds right. I paid $1,000 for my Mini Schnauzer and $1,300 for my Airedale. When I was looking for Darwin (mini schnauzer) I spoke to breeders who wanted upwards of $2,500. The breeder I got Darwin from lowered her price bc I was only looking for a pet and guaranteed I would get him fixed and not breed or show him.

Re: buying from a breeder

it might depend on the breed. We were looking for a Boxer or Lab and the boxers were 2400 and labs 1200. If the breeder is reputable, has a low number of litters, that's better but also means they're more expensive. Good luck!! Chat Icon

Yes, thats about average. I did an almost daily check of the online shelters, petfinder etc and I also did a daily check on Craigslist. One day there was a posting for a 10 month male purebred Golden. I jumped on it of course. $100 donation to the SPCA a promise of having him neutered and he was mine, papers, vet records and everything. The couple was so sweet. they had to reloate to Boston due to work and couldnt find a place to rent that would allow him. Keep an eye out if you want to rescue instead of buy. You can find purebreds. Re: buying from a breeder

I flew to a different state to get my dog, and HE was $900. (breed is about 20lbs)

But we paid because he came from champion stock. Better chance of being VERY healthy and good temperament.

Worth every penny because it WILL save us in the long run.
